Title: MC5a 8V71 govener and rack adjuscment
Post by: RobSedona on August 07, 2015, 10:24:31 AM
We are in so cal victorville area and can only get 1800 rpm after the 8v71 has been running for a few mins . Anyone near here that knows how to adjust this ? and the fast idle does not work.

Thanks Rob

Check the shut down cylinder on top sounds like it is not retracting all the way

If it has set for a long time you may have a injector stuck but the governor and rack setting don't change from setting

OK it has sat 4 years been starting it every month the 1800 rpm started on the way here by barstow Ca coming to work off the 7 grand I had borrow to pay the rip off Shop in Gallop NM with the drop box. also found they did not tighten the drive shaft bolts on the drop box side found that out getting the drive side drum free of the break pads the other day :(

Took off the stop unit and linkage same 1800 rpm :(

Will it hurt to drive it with only the 1800 rpm and not have the 2000 rpm it used to have will I lug things that way ? I will be towing a trailer to TX moving there:)

Rob Thanks

Thanks Rob

I bought mine at harbor freight. Cheap and works well. Stick the tape on the crank pulley... And shoot the gun at it

OK took it for a test drive and had no power to climb even a slight incline. stopped and meet a guy that does custom land racers land speed he had a contact tach. we took and ran the rack the whole tune up by the book. my tach shows 4.75 for idle and the other shows 550.  for no load mine shows 17 and the contact tach shows 21.50. but what really got fixed is everything in the governor and the rail was all bound up so now the stop lever and the throttle lever works easy and smooth.

Will set the Jakes and see if we can get them working. He also made me a wedge tool :) Then take her for a test drive.

I mover the bus to his place and he is a great guy he went and pulled the trailer over here :) He has a complete machine shop at his house. Will ask him if he would be will to help out bus nuts in need when they are in need around here :)

Yep it usually just takes a little paint thinner for cleaning and fresh oil and they are back to life,if it is running good I wouldn't bother with the wedge and the air gap setting JMW

OK is there a easy way to get a tach working in the front for driving.

on the test drive power was better but the rpms went down slow which made it hard to down shift Jake breaks where slow to come on.

Thanks Rob

How about a weak fuel pump. Do you get any smoke when it is under load on a grade? Are you getting full throttle at engine with pedal floored? Manual or air throttle?
Title: Re: MC5a 8V71 govener and rack adjuscment
Post by: RobSedona on August 12, 2015, 05:43:04 AM
its a manual throttle.  she smokes white with a little dark at take off and for a while driving have not gone to a good grade yet small ones are slow to pick up speed.

How do I test the Fuel pump?    and if it might be fuel I should also check air in take also right?

Thanks Rob

Screw a gauge in the secondary filter top if it reads 50 + lbs at full throttle you are good

Someone chime in here, you said the engine is slow to idle down, than indicates something is still wrong...

It's been sitting for 5 years all the linkage is stiff along with rack he just needs to change the oil, lube all linkage, add new fuel to the existing fuel and run the piss out of it for a few hundred miles it will get better with every mile

it will work. I would use it, if the price was right I am not partial to any oil, as long as it is CF2 rated in a DD.

i prefer Delo or Rotella.
