Title: Best toilet option?
Post by: Scott & Heather on July 30, 2015, 03:10:59 PM
Four years fulltiming and our Dometic 310 porcelain toilet has been holding urine in the polymer base for probably the past year. I always smelled it but never knew what it was until today. Removed the toilet and spilled literally a quart of urine on myself and the floor. Wife is 31 weeks preggo and we now don't have a toilet. She's a good sport though. Bath house is nice and 30 feet away at least. Ok, I called Dometic and they have this issue apparently. But their fix is to just send out a new toilet. I don't want a new toilet that holds urine in its base. So, I'm toilet shopping. Please help. $500 is really kinda not an option for a toilet if I can help it. Is there a China toilet that actually is reliable for our coaches and under $400?

where did the urine come out of, the overflow pipe?

If they are sending out a new one, maybe there was a defect that they corrected.

Here are some other models listed on camping world.

I purchased a AquaT 24 v electric flush from West Marine at a close out for 300 bucks to replace the Sealand in the bus.It has pump to pump fresh water from a source but I am not going to use that part.

I don't like toilets with pedals or the bowl look I was looking for a Micophor( probably wrong spelling) when I found this one

Temporary... Residential if you are staying on "thepole"... I would if I had enough wall to plumbing clearance.

You might decide it works for a permanent solution...

Some of the household ones now are very water frugal. Maybe worth considering if you have the space. No matter what you get, go for the tall ones; really appreciated as you age.

We have one of these at home and if you just pop the handle instead of holding it down, you can use less than a quart of water depending on the type of waste. I've never used one that can use so little water and do it's job.

Sealand 510 traveler. Simple, rebuildable, still in production. I have one in my bus for 21 years. Rebuilt once by me. Good Luck,TomC

Well there's two votes for sealand. And yet they are Dometic. Dometic sent out a ton of replacements under warranty for this issue to replace the 300. They sent out 310's to do this. And the 310's are doing the same thing now. I spent a lot of time yesterday looking hard at the unit and it's really a design flaw in the mating of the porcelain bowl and the polymer base. A foam seal in there deteriorates and then it's game over. Not fixable especially when the four bolts holding the China and plastic sandwich together are so corroded from exposure to caustic urine that they can't be loosened. I'd be interested in the sealand 510. Is it porcelain? I'll check it out. For the moment, a quick trip to Home Depot got us a toilet to get by. Wife is 31 weeks preggo as mentioned and I feel bad she has to get dressed, unlock the bus, walk to the bathhouse and back and relock the bus etc 5 times in the night. Not cool.

Why not silicone the halfs together and eliminate or supplement seal.Otherwise, expect to disassemble and replace seal every --- years. Change bolts to ss when first installing.

The toilet that I liked best in my RV was a Microphor.  I now have a something else now because I couldn't find a Microphor that I could afford.  The new one is now made out of SS and cost $2400.
A friend of mine has a used electric Microphor that is in good shape that he will sell for $150.00 plus crate and shipping.  He will be out of town until Sept.
This is good buy, I paid $600.00 for one in 1990, but it was a air flush.  They didn't make the electric flush then.

Hi Scott,
After 15 years of using RV toilets in the bus , 3 years ago we installed a home unit.
We were concerned whether it would cut down on our dry camping ( Q-site , the shore etc.) .
We have a 150 gallon waste tank ( all in one ).
When at dry camp areas we would dump every week.  The tank was not full when we drove into town to dump.
Now we still dump every week but the tank is more full, but not a problem.
We have a new toilet that doesn't use much water and I adjusted it to use even less.
The tank is right below the toilet so we don't need a lot of water to carry the waste very far at all, just clear the bowl.  Now we think its easier to clean and there is no tank smell due to the real water trap.
Frank.

We have a new toilet is the house that is high, is very deep and flushes like a rocket taking off, uses very little water made by Kohler. If the one in the bus goes this may be the replacement unit. With all the new low water useage toilets coming out you may even see them going into Rv's in the future. Some even have night lights built into them for the night time user.

Scott -  My Corsican bus brother.  I just replaced my sealand 510 with a Domestic 310.  Crap.  Well,  Ill have to check that seal.  That's pretty gross.  I picked up the 310 cause thats what you had and wife and the kids liked it.  I added the sprayer from the 510 and viola we were in business.  Ill have to keep an eye on that seal or just pull it apart now and replace it.  For 130$ new from Johnson's Surplus it seemed like a decent deal.  We liked the hieght of the seat as well.  No more squatting :).

Have them send you another 310 and tear it apart and replace the seal right away.

Sorry if this is kinda sensitive, but do they make a "male" full size model?

I think the 510 came in two heights if I remember correctly a shorty and a full height. I know mine is not a short height.

Sean, oh my. we really are Corsican....we just installed a house unit that uses about 1 gal per flush. Not too concerned about it since we travel pole to pole and have a 100 gallon tank. That being said, so far, I'm in love with my toilet. No loud banging of the water valve at night 6 times when preggo wife has to use it...no more stench, can use an exhaust fan in the bathroom without sucking smell up...no more fruit flies flying up out of the hole when we flush, and no more urine storing and spilling in the base. I'm sold. Actually at the moment we are completely renovating our coach in prep for kids. Crazy. Chessie, I couldn't separate the halves because the bolts we so badly corroded. Sean, I would seriously flip the toilet over and remove the slotted screws/bolts holding the two halves together and silicone it. Actually, don't do that cause it will break the foam factory seal and void your warranty. Just wait until it leaks :)
