Hi All,
Im trying to plan a trip to California, and most if not all RV parks specify "No busses or RVs older than 10 years old allowed". Have any of you found this to be a problem, and more importantly, has the park manager made an exception for you seeing that your rig wasnt a pile of garbage as implied in the 10 year rule?
Tell them it is 5 years old. Or better yet ask the age of the RV park, and if it is over ten (or five) years old, tell them you have a policy of not staying in old RV parks.
Great idea Jon!
I'll remember that one! 😄
Yes, we realize you have a $100,000 Prevost, but that other guy has a $5000 travel trailer, which is less than 10 years old. According to our rules, your bus is not up to our standards.
And maybe this is the kind of thing youd expect in the liberal paradise of the socialist republic of California?
Brian -
Send the potential campground an email with a photo of your rig embedded in it and ask if your rig is acceptable - just don't mention it's age in the message. Don't send it as an attachment, lots of places will reject an email with an attachment for security reasons, so embedding works better. If they say yes, book it. If they say no, move on, after politely telling them that you're now going to spend your money elsewhere plus that you'll be passing the word on via the internet that their campground is unfriendly to nice, clean older rigs.
This "10-year" rule is something that came about due to a proliferation of old "Partridge Family" skoolie types that would often outlive their welcome, to be polite. Thus the next suggestion is to not use the word "bus" when talking about your coach. You've got a Class A diesel pusher motorhome, either 35', 40' or 45'.
Oh, and in case you haven't noticed, a lot of these with the 10-year rule tend to be the places with big $$$ fees.
FWIW & HTH. . .
;)
It's not a problem here on the West coast as long as the bus is neat and clean, lol I have saw buses before I wouldn't want in my camp ground either if I owned the camp ground. That crap was started years ago to help sell new RV's.
The FMCA had a hand in it before checking to see how many members had older converted buses that one backfired on them and now they do nothing to combat it.Don't give them age none of us do I just say it is a converted bus but not a school bus
Never ran into it here in California. What part and post the name of the campgrounds. If you come up to northern Cali near Sacramento there are a lot of campgrounds on the Sacramento River Delta area and we always as RJ said put in a photo of our Bus and don't say the age. They always say come ahead.
Way up north the American River Resort will take you no Problem but it is in Redding and stay on the north side on it so you have WIFI.

I never tell them I have a bus. It's all semantics...verbiage is your friend. "I have a "Challenger II Coach" is what I tell them. Ours is kinda ugly though. The new bus we are converting will be pretty, and neat, and I will be doing what I can to make it look like a class A rv...in terms of paint job, etc.
This age thing is discrimination. I understand these folks who own lots in a high end RV park don't want their sensibilities offended by having a coach older than their Allegro Bus parked next door. But as a practical matter real people don't want to park next to snobs either.
The RV parks that implement such policies and then enforce them turn out to be their own worst enemies. Their RV park is going to age. and at some point a newer, more plush RV park will show up nearby and will begin to siphon off the new lot buyers and transients so what they do to renters today is going to bite them in the butt tomorrow. Already some RV resorts that have had that policy are seeing newer RV resorts compete with them and nothing would be more just than to have a couple dozen bus owners call to make a reservation and to ask the age question relating to their resort, followed with the comment that the RV owner's policy is to only stay at new RV resorts. It would be neat to see how they like it.
Hi;
Just my 2cents worth. When checking in, just say you have a 40ft
RV. This tells the folks how large a space you need. I don't volinteer
any more info than necessary. Besides, most parks will not turn away
business when you are standing at the registeration counter.
Also if that part is that snooty, then it's not my kind of place anyway.
I have never had a problem in the past.
Good luck
Merle.
P.S.
Just in case, have an alternate RV park picked out. (plan "B")
I have not had that problem here in California. When making the reservation, I say it is a 35ft class A motorhome. If they ask the make, I may say MCI or Challenger; there are so many rv manufacturers that nobody asks anything beyond that. I have not been turned away at any time even though my paint job is desperately old. I was once told though that the ten year rule had to do with the parks insurance policy. I do not know if that is actually true.
Just rust wrap your new RV and overstay your welcome

I have seen, (but have not stayed at) parks that require the little RVIA plaque.... of course it's just another money hook, probably yjay club we don't like started it... :)

We've stayed at several RV Parks in CA and have never been turned down. They've never even asked what year or make. If they do I will say it's a motor home or Class A. Never ever use the word bus.
If we pull up and they turn us down, we'll take our money elsewhere! ::)
Had one in Oceanside bring up the 10 year rule but they said Prevosts were ok
And if you're still working on your bus (as many of us always are), then isn't it a fresh conversion, hence brand new? Sort of like folk who knock down their whole house except for one wall, then say it's a "remodel" - yeah, sure.
John, being pedantic as usual

Nuff said. LOL ;D ;D ;D
If they won't take a MH over ten, I'm sure a transit is completely out of the question. The transits get regularily snubbed by insurance companies, as many of them won't insure a transit (or a school bus). We're the "other side of the family that lives across the tracks" of the bus world. ;D
I never worried about getting turned away, with me and my 1st bus just getting there was a task somedays
I wonder if "2013 Silverside" would confuse them.
Hi All, I have been staying in LA RV parks since 1979 and have had a couple denials, at the Californian in Acton, CA and the Walnut in Northridge, CA, even tho I had stayed there a few times before, with trailers class A & the 5A a few times also, a new person at the counter refused me, and my nice looking pro conversion, the Walnut wouldnt even accept a picture to consider it. Lvmci...
"No Buses or RVs over 10 years old"
is probably interpreted by many parks as "No Buses PERIOD, and no normal looking RVs over 10 years old""
I don't know anyone that did their own conversion with a bus less than 10 years old.
Just today I tried to book into the "Glowing Embers RV Park" in Edmonton and was turned down. I offered to send a photo of the coach and they weren't interested in looking at it. Just flat out "no".
Probably not our type of RV Park anyway, so we're still looking. If there are any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
Bryan
LuckyChow there's many many brand new Prevosts conversions, I have no idea how many overall, Jon might have a estimate though
We stayed at one of those gigantic parks in Phoenix, AZ. As I was checking in, they wanted the year. They wanted to inspect it first. So they sent out the maintenance man. He was gone for such a long time, they called him on the radio. He was showing others the bus! We stayed one night. Good Luck, TomC
The brand new Prevost conversions (as motorhomes, not entertainer coaches) probably number around 50 to 75 per year currently. At one time the number produced by converters was 3 or 4 times that number. And then the economy fell apart.
You know, the thing that drew me to rv'ing/busing in the first place was the comradery among the participants .Used to be you could go to a camp ground and it was not unusual to have my old rv parked with a Newell on one side and a school bus with a wood burning stove on the other .I started out with a leaky 20 ft Winnebago eye brow, but never ran in to this Big I .Little U situation. My last Motor Home was a 2004 model which was made so cheaply made that it was an embarrassment.I sold it and now am the proud owner(most of the time)of a twenty year old Prevost which is made much better than the highest priced motor home being made today,so I have little patience with snotty RV resorts that charge as much per night as a good motel because the offer "amenities" that most of us neither need or want.Just give me a little Mom and Pop RV park with clean rest room facilities and I'm happy.
We ran into a few parks that had the 10 year rule. They all politely asked that I email them a photo to see the condition of our "Eagle Class A motorhome". We never had an issue staying at any of the parks and, as many of you probably experience, the bus becomes the center of attention.
It seems that these parks just want to keep the riff-raff away, don't want skoolies, and would like to avoid AC units hanging out of the side windows and motorhomes that might break down and never leave the campground.

Motor homes are dated no so much anymore, but buses you can update bus with caps and lights if you choose
TomC we stayed in one of those huge retirement communities that had RV spaces too in northern Phoenix, they sent out the 'maintenance' (for lack of better description) person too. He barely made it through the doorway before he did a uturn and gave the thumbs up to the lady and then headed in the other direction.
I am with bigred, we like the mom and pops or county/state parks. You can keep your 'Resort' types, not really for me.
Be very careful who's toes you step on today because they may be connected to the butt you"ll have to kiss tomorrow.I have seen a couple of times some of these places would have been glad to see some 15 or 20 year old coaches.Kinda funny ,but that big wheel keeps turning and sooner or later it stop's at every one's door!!

That last line"but that big wheel keeps turning and sooner or later it stop's at every one's door!!" What does that mean? What is a big wheel?

When you see the Grim Reaper himself ride up to your house on one of these, you know it's time to go: http://originalbigwheel.us/ (http://originalbigwheel.us/) Don't let appearances deceive you - he's still the dude with that big ol' scythe.

Just my way of saying "what goes 'round comes 'round!!
Around here, the parks seem to be more concerned about older rigs messing up their power or not being able to leave when their money runs out.
I don't care what the rig parked beside me looks like - the worse it looks, the better mine looks. ;D
What does bother me -
- leaking water or worse on the ground.
- messing up my electrical power (my ability to run the A/C).
- rude, loud, obnoxious people or children or pets.
If they don't want me, their loss. - I probably would have been more uncomfortable than I made them. . .
LOL when Tony and Pam had their rally in the resort in Pahrump NV this spring that had a 10 year rule there was nothing there that could make it even if they had a 20 year rule and all was good
Kyle you are not to choosey who you park beside.
I know for a fact.
Might be different now that you are a NEWELL owner.
uncle ned
Forgot to mention that any rig that kills mosquitoes is welcome beside me - especially if the smoke is from a 2-stroke!
So are you guys saying I would not be welcome in all RV parks??
We play music as a family with our teenage kids. We were booked to perform at a park in Arizona a few years back where the sign at the entrance stated no Rv's older than 10 yrs and you also had to be at least 50 years of age. We didn't meet either requirement but because we were the entertainment we got to stay 3 nights and plenty of folks wanted to see the bus. Maybe suggest you'll sing for your site? Craig
In almost 12 full years of fulltiming we have stayed in a lot of rv parks and have never been turned away.
Yeah Ed, but you have a 5a, which everyone knows is timeless!
Fwiw, bus conversions seem to be given the year of the completed conversion. I was talking to the driver of a friends rented entertained, it was a 90s at best Prevost. When asked driver with a straight face .told me it was a 2009. Now I'm not up on my prevos but there is no way that bus was 6 years old...paint job, couches and flooring maybe. So like someone else mentioned if your still working on it, its newer than brand new.
Go to Walmart they have no 10 year rule ;D me I just don't like 50 bucks a night for a power cord
