I have an oil leak coming from 1 of the screws in the cover plate on my oil cooled 50n alternator. Is this something I can repair in place or does the alternator have to be refurbished? If it can be done in place, what is required? Thanks Craig
Did you try to tighten it a little? If you do, go easy. You can replace the gasket in place.Oil circulates through the recess when engine runs to cool the diodes used to convert a.c. to dc current. Oil cooling allows the high current output.

The generator, on your Grampa's old 1946 automobilr actually made DC current.
An alternator on you toad or bus makes AC current that is converted to DC.
Where are you going ? :)
GM calls it a generator in the shop manual. The 4104 used the old design dc generators with voltage regulators with relays to control voltage, amperage, and output. Near the last years of production, they offered an (alternator)generator similiar to what we have today. I don't know if they used different terms for the two in the 4104 supplement manual. My 4905 outputs 240 amps at rated speed.yrmv.
Btw, my coach uses an o-ring to seal the cover. Don't know when the upgrade from a gasket began.

Yes...120v is (relatively) easy... it's the hertz that hurts... ;D
I forgot to mention....remove hex plug below cover before taking it off. There is about 1 qt of oil in the diode cavity behind the cover. Don't need to refill; engine will fill it. Just put the oil back in engine if it is clean
So it's not 60, how many is it? I mean can we run 120 into our coaches and avoid generator install?

my limited knowledge is this, it would be somewhere around 400Hz.
