Title: Projection TV
Post by: luvrbus on July 06, 2015, 04:43:02 PM
Anybody using a projection TV in there coach ? I am thinking about using a combo unit HDTV with a DVD player with a LED projection light around 4000 lumen and a 15,000:1 contrast ratio.

I want a 60 to 72 inch remote control screen mounted in the ceiling to be out of the way.I only know of 1 person using the setup and he has never had a problem in all the years he has had it, but his is a $$$$$ home theater type with the speakers in the screen I don't need that.

I just want something simple and dependable without using a flat screen TV that with most you get a pain in the neck from looking up what say the group

I'm not up on the latest and greatest so take this with a bit of salt.   Several years ago projectors used expensive lamps ( $200).  Doubt they could take life on the road.

i think they can be mounted successfully, the prices have come down, a lot of family camper types carry them for outdoor popcorn shows for kids in rv parks too.

i would have one except all my furniture would be 90 degrees to anyplace i could put the screen... :-\

The lamp is reason I was thinking LED the supplier says movement should not cause any problems with the lamp says it will last for 20,000 hrs I don't know that just maybe salesman talk

Cut and PAsTed from a web site with more knowledge than I'll ever have but maybe something the salesman didn;t mention.

"Well, that's the big problem. No matter how bright the projector, and no matter how clever the screen material, any ambient light in the room is going to wash out the image. Forget about watching TV with the shades up, or the lights on. You need absolute light control in your room, or you'll be forced to watch TV only at night. In my theater, there is some light during the day, but not enough to wash out the image"

I would actually see one before buying.  I saw one not long ago and the picture just wasn't that great and it wasn't even in a bright room. If your windows aren't covered I would be afraid the picture would just wash out.

I am planning on doing something similar (my tv's are small around 18") I am not sure if I am going to mount it or just set it out when needed. Here is the one that I am looking at, it is not super bright or super high quality but it is cheap enough to experiment with. I am only planning on using it at night for movie watching so the brightness should be good enough. You are right that LED is probably the best way to go since it will outlast the old style bulb.

I considered it when I built my Eagle, thought a roll down screen would be neat.  Quickly rejected the idea after research.  What's wrong with a LED big flat screen on a power motor?  Larry has installed lots of them, just put one in Ben's Flx and it looks great.

hi Clifford, true OLED tvs are now readily available, smallest is 55", very light, very thin 3/4" thick,  some curved to improve viewing angle, not cheap, they come with integral mounts on back, you could do the samething I did on a pole or flip down mount, tom...
