My 4106-038 with an 8V71 and 4 speed weighs about 26,000 pounds loaded.   Way under maximum load.

What is the safe limit?

12,000 on the front axle
20,000 on the drive axle
32,000 GVW

(Note that this is NOT published anywhere - GM never published this data for their coaches until the Feds required it in 1975 or so.  Thus it's based on the Federal bridge load limits.)

FWIW & HTH. . .

On my 40ft transit (which are built considerably heavier than highway buses), the front axle is 13,000lbs and the rear is 23,000lbs for a total of 36,000lbs. My bus weighed 28,000lbs stripped ready to convert. After conversion weighed in at 31,000lbs-so added right at 3,000lbs. Now it weighs 10,500lbs in front, 20,500lb in rear. How many motorhomes do you see totally loaded and with full tanks that have an extra 5,000lbs till loaded? One of the many reasons to convert a bus.

My truck will be the same way. The stretched truck chassis weighed 18,000lbs, the box was an extra 10,000lbs. Even with adding 4,000lbs for the conversion and carrying a small car weighing around 3,000lbs, that puts me at 35,000lbs. The front is rated at 12,000lbs the rear tandems at 38,000lbs on 44,000lb 8 air-bag suspension. That means I'll be 15,000lbs from rating. Then if I pull a boat at 10,000lbs, still way under at 45,000lbs. When I was moving furniture, my empty weight on the truck was 48,000lbs. At that weight, I pulled the south bound Grapevine (I-5) at 50mph. Hills are going to disappear, compared to the bus (even with the turbo on the bus). Good Luck, TomC

Ok thank you everyone!

That gives me a starting point and I am trying to keep it as light as possible.

I just weighed my 40 ft 4905 Monday after getting the Jakes installed.  It weighed in at 24900.  I think I was at 9200 on the front axle and 15700 on the rear axle.  I had a full tank of fuel, but only about a quarter tank of water(25 gal), and all our camping stuff(except clothes and bicycles).  The weight will go up when I add my generator and batteries.  I expect I will have about another 1500 lbs when I am completely converted.
