Title: Revisiting Bus Roof Coatings
Post by: Darkspeed on June 01, 2015, 08:20:11 PM
It seems that the roof coatings threads are a couple of years old and I am wanting to coat my 4106 with something white that will also provide additional protection from potential leaks.

I know there was a lot of talk about these two Blackjack 1000 and Henry 287.

Anyone have any long term results / problems with these or other better coatings?

Thank you!

I am also going to paint my roof hopefully soon, my roof will be bare aluminum when I start so I am curious if everyone starts out that way and do you use primer. Originally I was going to use the Henry product but I have been leaning towards just spraying it white with auto paint. When you apply the Henry type of roof covering can you paint a color over it, I am going to paint a red stripe on the sides of my roof?

I was also looking into this product but I don't think it is for me, but someone else might be interested.

I put two or three coats of the henry product on my roof, after scraping it down to the bare aluminum.Has been on for 4 years now and holding very nicely.I am going to wash it down, scuff it up,and apply a few more coats this season. Bus was  full of leaks prior to my coating it. happy to say I have been dry since.

I used the Henry product about 8 years ago on a bus I sold.  The owner recently told me it's still doing a good job.  I had a couple of small leaks when I put it on, but it never leaked afterwards.

Very interested in rolling on the best white sealant. Would lightly pressure wash first, then use a paint brush to precoat seams and potential leak areas including the drip rails, then roll on one or two heavy coats of product.
Which product???
Thanks for adding to this thread!

I also heard from one guy who used this and swears by it but it is 100% silicone base.

Just talked to Henry tech support and the 887HS TROPI-COOL is the only product they recommend for RV / BUS use.

He said it will last a long long time and if it does need to be recoated it can be top coated with the same product

I am probably going to put liquid EPDM on my roof.  I tried a highly rated roof coating and it ended up so thin that I don't think it did anything.

I believe next to the line a bed application the EPDM would be my choice also.I like the way Jim does the AC or vent pipe opening with the lineabed stuff he throws up a little ledge around the opening and you never have any leaks

I have used Koolseal on several RV's, although the Henry product might be similar.  I bought a 5 gallon bucket 8 years ago and did 2 coats on this bus then.  It only required washing the roof down with TSP.  Their tech support said it had a 10 year warranty.  I did not have any problems or leaks since.  Being that the bus is out in the desert sun for all that time, I wanted to recoat it, so this year I dug out the old 5 gallon pale.  It was still good, so I did the exact same thing I did last time; TSP and 2 coats.

Although it is quite possible that many of these elastomeric products are relatively the same, check with the manufacturer to make sure that they recommend it for an RV.

Yep I have 9 seams with 5 roof air and we are going to apply the hot spray line a bed material to the roof and forget about repainting the roof or any leaks

Ahh thanks, Im looking to do this without moving the bus as I have it apart at the moment.

What is your opinion on this > http://www.epdmcoatings.com/rv-roof-repair.php (http://www.epdmcoatings.com/rv-roof-repair.php)

Is this the EPDM roof coating you were recommending?

That is good stuff not as cheap as Henry's or other brands of coating but far superior IMO

I buy coating from a dealer in Phoenix www.bestmaterials.com (http://www.bestmaterials.com) they sell about everything for the roof including RV the Roof Mate they sell is a better product than Henry's you buy at box stores sure it cost a little more but worth it JMO but I still prefer the EPDM

Thanks luvrbus, I just ordered some EPDM!

Will fresh EPDM stick to dried EPDM if I need to do touchups?

Darkspeed, I am right behind you regarding the EPDM for your bus roof.
Will you post your results? Also, did you go thru Amazon?
Did the application take a recoating? (My guess is 'yes' because folks seem to first cut-in with a brush, then use a roller later.)
Good luck, and do tell!
