I'm thinking of going to a MT39 starter but don't know what sae starter the MC-8 takes. I did a search and didn't find anything on the topic, lots of flywheel housing discussion but nothing on starters. In looking for a starter I find sae#1 and sae#3 listed for the MT39, anyone know which one is correct, thanks, Mike.
Hi Mike.
You might get more accurate answers if you would say which engine you want to start.
Frank
I have a 8v92 but the same starter that was cranking the old 8v71 is cranking the 92 currently. I thought it might be a good idea to carry a spare when the 42mt fails. Thanks, Mike.

Regarding the MT39 starter...iIRC the starter mounting flange fits both SAE 1 and SAE 3 bell housings.. the clocking may be different per each specific motor tho...
clear as mud ?
the easy answer is that SAE 1 HAS LARGER BOLTS....THE SAE 3 IS A SMALLER DIAMETER.
1 20.125 20.88 12 7/16-14
2 17.652 18.38 12 3/8-16
3 16.125 16.88 12 3/8-16

Thanks for the input, I was not understanding the Delco catalog, I think they were referring to flywheel housings which makes more sense. I suppose a better question would have been if anyone has a part number for a 39mt for an 8v92. Thanks, Mike.

Again, You would wish for an MT39 part number, "clocked" for an MCI8 19xx with a 8v92....
If you can find a buy on the 44MT Delco buy it then you can clock the 44MT to fit any engine,MCI and Prevost will use the same 39MT starter but I don't have the parts number
Don't know if this will help you or not, on the invoice that i got from Freightliner when i bought my 39MT a year ago it shows a part # DR/8200330, i have a 8v71 in my MCI 5A.
Thanks for the number, that is a number I came up with as a possible yesterday afternoon combing through Delco literature on line. That helps a lot, Mike.
