Title: Driver & Co Air Ride Seat Choice
Post by: Jim Eh. on May 02, 2015, 05:43:21 PM
Looking of views on good seats for driver and "navigator" with a balance of comfort & value. Swivel, heat, 3 air cntrls (height, lumbar, bolster or?) ... cloth.

Quite satisfied with my Bostrom, although I hard mounted it to the stock pedestal and didn't hook up air for the doo-dads.

The 5 have rigid mounted seats from the factory?
Does the east coast have limitless infrastructure budgets that your roads are like glass? Not being a smart a$$ just wondering why you would you not connect the air?

If you get an air ride, make sure there is enough air in it. I forgot to fill it before we left AZ last Feb. and hit a big bump. It slamed me into the bottom and I am still sore on my fractured tail bone from it. Worse pain I have ever had.

All the stock older MCI's I ever saw had the same pedestal, I think mine is actually from a MC-9.  When I got my bus it had a cheezy RV swivel mount that had already bent.  Anyway, the issue for me was the clutch pedal is so heavy if I had an air ride seat I'd be lifting myself up instead of pushing the clutch down...

Air seats would be nice in a bus, but not necessary like in a truck. Buses ride smooth enough. Sure the air adjustments would be nice such as height that you could change as you drive. I find that once it is adjusted right, I don't change it anyway.

I once met a trucker driving a Pete all chromed up, with the low sun visor,  who had a Chrysler mini van seat hard mounted to the floor. He thought that was the greatest thing... His run was all highway though.

I've heard the older 70's Chrysler Imperial Seals have all the bells and whistles on them and are very comfortable if you can find one in good condition.

I have power flex steel seats now ...but my old 2003 ford excursion seats are the best seat I have sat in as of yet and if you could find a set that were in good shape at a auto wrecker they would not be to much $$$$

When I was driving truck (I always drove cabovers) I drove with the air seats all the way down with no air to look cool. The only time I would put air in is if I were on a really rough road (lot of the time on the east coast). With my bus, it has a low back National air ride seat that I never changed. Again I ride with the seat all the way down. If the sun gets low, I pump the seat all the way up to ride high (don't have sun visor).
Air ride seats are not needed in an air ride (or Eagle) bus. Save your money and find a comfortable non air ride seat. Good Luck, TomC

Interesting discussion, as just this weekend, I took the air ride seat out and see others have done so also.

My case was I never added air or deflated, the bus rides so smooth as is, I needed the lowered seat since installing a telescopic steering column

Krank, if you find an non-air ride seat and want a base, I have a brand new one I could send you.

Thank you for the offer Brian but one stipulation on purchasing the bus was that momma gets an air ride seat. She came with me on a few hauls a while back in some of our trucks with spring ride rears and she once wanted me to pull into a service bay and have the seats swapped. So I will be looking for a set of air ride seats ... sadly even before a genny.

Be careful, truck seats and bus seats are not the same.  Truck seats are behind the axel and bus seats are in front of the axel.  You will need to change the shock if you get a truck seat.

I found a used Bostrom out of a Mack and installed in my -5. It even has swivel so I can turn it 90 degrees for use when parked. We replaced a Flexsteel with it.

We (my wife and I) absolutely love it. On our trip to Texas last month, my wife asked if we could put air ride seats in her two cars.

Maybe an MC5 rides rougher than the 40 footers but its amazing what an improvement it makes. The fact that she can easily adjust up and down is an added advantage. I would totally recommend it but I would shop the junkyards and get a set of them there. Now I probably lucked out because this seat doesn't even have a crack or a stain in it. Paid $450.00 for it. Check out Erickson Trucks in Jackson, MN.

Typical for me. While procrastinating about it I missed out on a set of KW seats, full air adjustments everywhere,  heat & swivel. Problem was they were about 16 hrs round trip to go and get. Shipping would have priced them out of reach so I keep looking.
My MC12 has an air ride drivers seat but fabric (kinda wrong color too), cushion & backrest padding, and mechanical parts are all worn. Probably not worth rebuilding and fabric matching a single for the missus. I have had estimates for recovering seats before and I don't expect the price has gone down in the last 5 years.
