Just went to have my propane tanks filled.
Would fill the mounted tank that has been in the coach for years but would not fill the 40lb one that had a 02 date on it.
and we wonder why all mfg has left the country, stupid gov. rules.
The portable tank looks new and has probably been filled 4 time over its life with me. I was more or less a spare when the big mounted tank ran out and I did not want to move the coach.
I guess I will have to just use tanks from the exchange rack they do not seem to go by the same rules.
my rant for the day

Rules do suck for older folks lol the difference in the tanks are the way they are listed in their dumb a** rule book someone from the exchange propane outfits paid for a lawmakers vacation it's not about safety all bs
Ned,
They won't fill them after 10 years past the documented tank inspection. I have two horizontal 30lb tanks that look like new, but are 25 yrs old! With only the water heater and stove using them (summer camping), it takes me forever to empty them!. The last place that filled them for me noticed the date --- afterwards!!
I found a place locally that will inspect them, but I am waiting to empty them--will probably take all summer.

The major propane dealers will not fill them but usually offer to inspect them for a price and than will fill them. Recently, I had the same thing happen so I went to a convenience store that did propane and the kid didn't even look at the date. I have another to fill so will soon see if my luck holds out.
My understanding (but please correct me if I'm wrong) is that portable upright LPG cylinders, such as the common 20 lb BBQ grill size and similar 30 lb and larger ones, are subject to DOT regulations, and must be inspected and recertified after 12 years from their date of manufacture, then thereafter every five years. If they're not recertified they cannot be refilled. On the other hand, horizontal permanently-mounted tanks in RVs fall under ASME regulations, and do not need periodic recertification - they merely need to look good and not have obvious problems such as bad rust, then they're always good to go. (We have a big propane tank at work for our forklifts, and we've never needed to get it recertified. When it begins to get rusty we repaint it, but that's all we do!)
Am I on the right track with this?
John
That is the way it works John
John is right the certification is another tax. they have to be re certified every 5 years.
That includes a look and sticking a sticker on the side and charging you 5 dollars and then they refill it.
just 22 dollars for 30 lbs of propane and 5 dollars for the sticker. good till the next refill if I live that long.
or 5 years

Ned, that's a good deal. They charge much more to recert the tanks here. I don't remember how much but think it could be $20-$25. I think they pressure test it too though.
Lin, everything is more expensive in California......we went into a grocery store this morning in Lone Pine and had sticker shock. Things were 2-3 times more than what we have been paying in Yuma. Got gas tonight for the jeep and paid $3.49, In Yuma we were paying $2.45
Ed, why would you go into California anyway?...them prices be a bargan compared to that state farther WEST you talkin about...just sayin..lol
Gasoline prices (and Diesels a bit too) are going up in Calif since a couple of the refineries are conveniently off line for maintenance. There is always someway the petroleum companies find a way to jack up the prices when they have been low for so long. At least Diesel in Cal is still floating around $3/gal. Good Luck, TomC
Ed- As you know Ca fuel prices are always higher the Az. However, due to its isolated location, Lone Pine is really going to be high. If you got a chance to run around the mountain a bit though, it's worth it.
Filled the bus before we left Yuma so won't need any diesel for a while. :) Taking our time and going up 395 playing tourist. ;D
Ed if you really slow down and wait 3 weeks, you could take in Mule Days in Bishop on the May long week-end. We haven't seen it, but it is on the wish list for one of these years. Last time through, we were told they would be lots of RV parking at the fair grounds. Enjoy your travels.
JC
JC, we are moving up to the Bishop area today for a couple of days. My brother came thru there one year in his rv during mule days and said he would not do that again! ;D We will be in Oregon by the time they have it this year.
The hwy north of Bishop going into Nevada has some beautiful scenery, some pretty fair sized grades too. Be safe
