Title: Escape hatch
Post by: BeastMaster on April 25, 2015, 05:57:35 PM
The original builder, left the rear hatch in my MCI102C. However finished the inside headliner hiding the hatch. I would like to expose the hatch and be able to use it. Can I remove the hatch lid from the outside in order to start a clean removal or headliner?. What problems will I encounter or any better ideas. Thanks in advance.

Maybe. Not familiar with the 102, but here's some information on my MC9 hatch. Maybe it will offer some insight.

Allan,

Which hatch does it have, the rectangular one or the square Transpec (24" X 24")?

I have the rectangular type.  If you want to expose the hatch cleanly you would start by X-ing through the headliner in the middle of the hatch, which will give access to the handle, which is about 3" by 8".  Pop the handle down, and the hatch will flip completely out of the way.  You might be able to get the hatch off from the outside by removing the hinges, but that latch is a pretty good one, it may still hold the hatch shut, so you'd have to do the inside anyway.  Cutting a quite small hole, say 4" by 10", in the middle of the space you are going to remove would leave ample material around the outside to finish the edge, I would think.

It is the rectangular type. Thanks for all the responses.  Sounds like removing hinges is not a good approach.
