Post by: eagle19952 on April 20, 2015, 09:46:04 PM
Thoughts about how often, what kind, and where to buy.

Thanks.  :)

Are  these spec's for coolant sufficient for DD 2 strokes... Caterpillar EC-1, Cummins 14603, and DDC long-life specifications...

Should any pink coolant be used in a detroit 2 stroke ?

How about Zerex ZXED1 Heavy Duty Extended Life Concentrate Antifreeze/Coolant

I was told to use the green stuff mixed with distilled water, so I did. We also have an 8v71.

We used Zerex Heavy Duty Extended Life when we refilled after the motor rebuild last summer. The ZXED1 is the part #.   It is pink. If i recall right, i think that Clifford said that anymore the color of antifreeze doesn't matter. It says that it does meet or exceed DD specs as well as Cat, Cummins, International, John Deere, Mack, Terex, Link Belt and Thermo King.  We have an 8v71. Might be different for a 92 series.

For flushing, Detroit has a 2 part flush kit.

Who has the part number?

First part does the job, 2nd part is the neutralizer.

Need some big containers to catch it all. Empty the 2nd part into the collected 1st part to neutralize the waste.

Then lots of rinsing and add your anti-freeze.

Good tip is to mix the powder with hot water to aid in dissolving.

Personal protective gear, mono-goggle for splashes strongly recommended.

Does the job on the accumulated slime and scale.

Happy coaching!

hmmm... so after neutralizing the potion, can it be disposed of without an EPA permit ...

maybe this is a job i need to hire out or rethink a bit more ?

I have never had over-heating problems, I am coming up on the useful life of the anti freeze so i am wondering now if it's really beneficial to chemically flush it ?

Last year I went from green to Fleet Guard, haven't run a 8 % grade in the rockies in july yet, but it runs almost 10 degrees cooler (too cool actually) on the flats in fall/winter temps - flushed it 3 or 4 times by running it hard to get thermostats wide open clean the driver's line - the beauty is it's pre-charged with SCA's so every time you add coolant you replenish it - HTH

The best I found for flushing is the BG takes 6 bottles for your system, the Power Cool is good antifreeze even if it is pink, and here we go I don't go the distilled water route R/O at 20 cents a gal has worked for me over the years with out any problems and it balances easy.
PowerCool is pre charged if you have a water filter it will need to be turned off or a new no chemical filter installed and use only the Powercool 3000 if maintenance is needed later.FWIW I buy the heavy duty green from FreightLiner their Alliance brand it's good, lasts plus easy to balance with R/O water  ;D

Does antifreeze have a wear out? I thought if you tested it and added the correct stuff as needed it, it did not need replacing.
