Title: toilet location
Post by: Nel on April 17, 2015, 06:40:39 AM
Hi all, was wondering if it's ok to have the toilet about 4 to 5 feet away from the black tank on my 4104. redoing the complete interior and looks like that's where it's going to end up unless it's a big no no for some reason . Also what size drain pvc pipe would you recommend.

Thanks, Nel

Hi Nel,

I can only speak from our experience. We've live fulltime in our coach for almost 4 years now without any issues with our setup. Our toilet sits about 3 feet from our black tank. The pipe runs at a slight angle downward from toilet to tank. We used 3 inch pipe I think. To keep things flushed out, I also "Y" piped our bathroom sink and shower into the pipe. So if anything gets sticky, it gets rinsed out when you wash your hands and/or shower. Here's a pic of our setup:

My 45gal black tank is mounted fore and aft in the center of the bus. My toilet is next to the right wall. There is about a 4ft run. I just have to use a bit more when flushing #2-about a half bowl full. Has not been a problem. Good Luck, TomC

Nel

When I got my MC-8 it was a professional conversion (Entertainer) the toilet was in the far back with a 3" soil pipe running about 8' to the tank. Was converted in 75. Never was a problem.

Dang Scott -  Is that the bay in your bus?  Looks nice and clean!

Ours is about a 3' run.  I give it a couple of good full bowl flushes when we are hooked up before we leave a park.  Having good seals in the bowl helps with any smell.

Don't forget to vent it.  I think a roof vent is the preferred method although ours is vented out the rear wheel well and it works fine.

+1 on the vent. Ours is vented through the floor of the luggage bay and we haven't had any issues. But you better ask the guys parked next to me at the Arcadia rally. Sean, yep :) but that's the bay before all the plumbing was installed :) it's packed to the hilt now! Miss you guys

Nel -

Four to five feet shouldn't be a problem, as long as you keep the run downhill and use "sweep" elbows, not regular ones.

FWIW & HTH. . .

Yes, it's that downward angle that's important.  I once had a plumber explain it to me this way --- if the angle is too flat, there's not enough water force to move "solid matter"; if it's too large an angle (too much drop), the water rushes past a solid and doesn't push it down efficiently.  Also, too much an angle will drain water from the pipe quickly and allow it to dry out and leave any unmoved solids to dry in the pipe which really builds up in a short time.  I don't know what the best angle is, but apparently, there is one!
I think that everyone agrees that the best arrangement is a straight drop but sometimes that's not practical; if you can't do that, it is possible to make the toilet waste move OK but you have to set it up right.

Thanks, Don, that's what I had in my head but I didn't want to put anything out there that I wasn't sure about.

hold a nickel (on edge) on the uphill end of a 4 foot level (between the level and the pipe...) raise the downhill end to the pipe. (underside) Reverse the nickel when grading on top of the pipe
check your bubble.  :)

Clears as mud ?  :o

My toilet sits next to the the shower stall so when I piped the drains in I found a 3" connector that had an 1" 1/2 connector on the side of it so when the shower is used which is usually every day the shower water flushes the 3" toilet out into the black tank.
