A friend of mine "claims that he is a full timer*" in California. A lot of people in this medium (BCM,BNO,BCI and around the net) claim they are full timers, but are they?
If you are hooked up to a pole somewhere in the nation or living out your dream in a WalMart parking lot, does this make you a full timer?
All of us need a base plate, insurance, medical needs, some own property in one location or another. So how does this meet the criteria of being on the road "full time?"
To the casual observer, some of this appears to be a factual statement on the bus lifestyle.
Here is the rub, you sit in your house day after day, you are not a full timer. Jerking a trailer around the states doing your thing, believe it or not, makes you commercial and subject to "big fines" when caught, full timing or not. DOT will not recognize you as a full-timer by any stretch of the imagination.
My friend in Pismo Beach, California "has to move once a year," he has set times to be in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, at his membership campground. Then after his mandatory annual stay he moves from there, to a free spot at the Air Force Base outside Las Vegas, Nevada near Henderson.
All that seems to me to be pretty well scheduled and structured, and does NOT fit the definition of Full Timing to me, but yet, he insists that he is just that.
All the time boasting he is a "Full Timer" while sucking off the pole, just like a few name-less souls who haunt these boards and claim they are the same. One thing about the Internet and America.
We are really good at fooling everyone, and in some cases, ourselves.
When someone inquires of our bus lifestyle, I try to be honest about it, and just say .... "We are pretend campers" and we just love it.
Please excuse me once again for pin-pointing another absurdity of life, and then like the fool I am, posting about it. Mondays are usually pretty slow, and hard on wanna-be bus board over-achievers such as myself.
But it does keep me outta the beer joints ... and that works for me.
Watch those right-handers.

* Full-timing is a term used among motorhome individuals and families who live "full-time" in their motorhome or RV. Such mobile individuals are often called full-timers. Full-timing is a world-wide activity, and there are many bloggers who record their day-to-day life on the road. The term has been discussed in publications since around 1993. You can find more information on this here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulltiming)
Don't be so judgmental or you may be judged mental (which may be what you want)"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulltiming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulltiming)
Does "full-timing" presuppose that you're on the move a certain number of times per year or that you cover a certain mileage per year? Or are you saying that if you're hooked up to utilities at a campground, as opposed to boondocking completely off the grid, then you're not full-timing but merely living in a bus or RV? This is interesting.
I'm building my conversion to be easily capable of supporting me off-grid for at least one month at a time, but if I do exactly this and just drive into town every few weeks to dump tanks and get more supplies, is this something different than full-timing?

It was not judgemental it was an observation, nothing more. The link you posted was already provided (bottom of the post).

There is no such thing as a "free spot" at an Air Force Base since the government decided in 1992 that all recreation activities for the military must be self supporting. Most sites cost less than the surrounding economy, but are far from free! In fact the funds generated from the campgrounds support the other "free" facilities and activities such as the gym, youth sports, etc.

Hey thank you for setting me straight, I am working off of what my friend is telling me (ex-colonel in the AF) and he could possibly be
exaggerating in order to clarify.
Appreciate your comment.
BCO
Don,
Yes-- $25 a night is just about free on a colonel's retirement! :D
They must cut the Colonels and higher ranking officers a deal we have a friend that is a retired bird colonel we meet up in Ft Hood or others bases. I never saw him pay and they never charged me either traveling with him.Signs all over the place no fire arms or hunting then we bird hunt on Ft Hood it scares me to death and he just laughs at me lol he does draw big bucks from his retirement
Marilyn has always been real clear about one thing: "WE DON'T CAMP"
We've got indoor plumbing, hot and cold running water, fridge, freezer, stove, TV(s) and beds. That ain't camping no matter where or how often you do it. When we were young and in love/lust I got her out in a tent a couple of times but she doesn't love me enough to do that any more. And I don't miss it.
I dunno whether we were "fulltimers" or not. We lived in a bus for over 5 years - slept, crapt and cookt in it 365 days out of the year. On the other hand, plenty of those nights it was back in the same place, plugged into the same pole - we even had a yard with grass that needed mowing for some of that time. I'm not sure why it matters so much to some people but there's no doubt it does.
We run into the same thing now in the boating community. We're just mere part time cruisers - in the boating world the higher order calls themselves "liveaboards". Lots of them never move further than the 6 inches of slack in their mooring lines but they're still liveaboards. We lease a year round slip because that's the only way we can be sure of having one but if we're onboard the boat its rarely in the slip. That actually makes us UNusual - kind of like we owned a park model in some gated community and pulled it out for 6 months every year.
Maybe everybody should just do what works for them and not worry about what they call themselves or why someone else does it different.
It appears to me that one folks just need to flap their pencil. If there is a sliver of relative application to a bus conversion well then it must be worth digitizing for posterity.
I'm guessing Google won't point them at a camping/rv site. :-\
Hi Don, I always thought of full timing as living in your bus, not spending most weeks of the year in one spot, but "moving to where the climate suits my clothes" as the songs prose went. Taking Tami to the beach for several days at a time, till she gets tired of it, then to the mountains for some trout fishing. Yea, partial timing, sorta timing, summer timing, winter timing, snow birding or snow boaring, or work camping, dont care, cant wait to do it, lvmci...
No property taxes, no house, no shop, no yard work, drivers licenses from a state with no income taxes, cheap plates and insurance,no job not looking either,10 dollar a month cell phone plan, using Lowes Wifi and spending your money before the kids get their hands on it that's full timing it sounds good to me ;D but to late in life for me to make it happen

No, not tripe, but a little lower in the digestive tract, yes. Shite, in other words.
Humm.... I guess real "full timers" are homeless people that sleep in doorways, parks, and anywhere they don't get kicked out of.
Dumb post.

Once again Donald you amaze me ... What is a one folks? This comment doesn't make sense at all, but then again, "I am kind of used to that." I thought you said you "were going to ignore my sorry personality" and here you are but one more time junking up the thread.
Every time I see a comment from you Donald, it sort of sickens me deep inside. It always reminds me of the time that Uncle Earl showed up at the Family Reunion all tanked up and three-sheets out of his mind, everyone just stood there and watched him walk across the room, then he leaned over and vomited in Aunt Marie's potato salad.

Right now, until you make it to retirement, I guess you will have to settle for star gazin on the Mesa huh? I hear over around Bridgeport the trout fishing is excellent.

The act of writing does not often come easy to me. This got me to thinking; what would happen if I began from a starting point of unabashed happiness that was not alcohol induced? Having read that my post was "dumb" it brought a welcome smile to my face, as George Dubya would say, "Mission Accomplished."
Now I am stuck with the dilemma of trying to find something, more interesting, better suited to a tough crowd. Something better? Something ... less dumb?
These questions, and several others which I deleted because they were belabored and manipulative, caused me to look at all the blessings in my life so I could experience a state of joy from which to write.
Sort of like the day you opened the door of the trash compactor, dropped the Rubic's Cube inside the bin, and then pushed the button and gave up. So this morning, after a little soul-searching I became aware of the grace and bounty which surrounds and sustains me. And I began to write this comment which, I have to say, sucks so badly it staggers the mind.
I suppose I will just have to try harder, this is a hard room to work indeed.

Seriously, 5 ranting posts in a row all trying to bash someone? I didn't read past about the first sentence of the first one, because it is all the same BS from you.
Does being a coal monkey on a railroad get you heath insurance when you retire? If so, check into what your coverage is for psychiatric help. If you can't afford it, I can get you a few check lists that will help us identify what disorders you have besides the obvious Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
Oh my where is ROS when you need him,if you don't like don't read it a simple fix without calling names
Clifford, I think we should have a breathalyzer test that members have to pass before posting.
And a permanent block of all capital letter posts... All Caps posts are starting off on the wrong foot and never end well.
RB
I believe ROS is in the process of driving his bus home, but I don't know what that has to do with this.
While you may think BCO's personal attacks on people are cute, I don't. When you are one of his victims you might understand why I am supporting other victims of his tirades.
Why would you think you are a 'victim' and others that have been attacked here by others aren't???
People that live in glass houses ......
I don't have a dog in this fight just don't read if it offends you, the Don and Donald thing has been going on for a long time both are grown adults let them hash it out when you make comments you can be assured Don is going fire back just like Donald did on the ROS deal
Mung
I for one don't think any of this is funny so please don't assume that's what I'm saying. I am assuming however that you have ignored this person that you feel has victimized you correct? If not, you are not serious about stopping this, you are merely using a victim stance to perpetuate discussions that have nothing to do with buses and then complaining that they not relevant bus related posts. How is that part of a solution?
RB
My being targeted happened when I dared to not bow down to Loren/Boxcar when he told me everything that was wrong about my tire choices. That lead to him posting things on both boards and dedicating several blog entries to me on his little rant blog.
So do tell how ignoring him on this board is going to solve the problem.
From what I take of his latest attack on Don, it started on Facebook and instead of keeping it there he came here and started bashing Don. Why exactly is it OK for him to do things like that? What is the purpose of his posts?
At some point enough is enough and we are well past that point.
Mung.
As soon as you ignore him you will be able to decide for yourself whether or not that solved the problem.
To a guy without a horse in the race, you just named and accused to people of doing exactly what you are doing by justifying your anger with a response.
I asked you a number of questions that you seemed to avoid completely so if I just ask you straight out why do you have a problem using a feature that has been provided to you for exactly this type of situation can I expect a straight answer?
I am dumbfounded here???
Patient: Doctor it hurts when I bend my elbow into an unnatural position...
Doctor: Stop bending your elbow into an unnatural position.
Problem solved.
Unless of course one likes complaining about bending their elbow into an unnatural position because it helps their argument against elbows....
The number one reason I won't hit the ignore button is because that is exactly what he wants. He wants to be able to say that he has more ignores than other people. Then once I ignore him, he will post random crap about me in posts like he does with the others that have ignored him.
I prefer not to close my eyes and pretend the problem doesn't exist.

Hello big bad wordsmith, I may not have grammer and context down in the manner you are capable of, but you know and i know that you really perceive that i am weaker than you and you are a person who gets great joy from exercising your word bullying prowess to further make me look a fool. You know it and I know it, ( I still have the E-mails that you sent telling me that you would never stop).. I don't understand your specific brand of crazy, but I do admire your total commitment to it.
Every time I see a comment from you Donald, it sort of sickens me deep inside. Glad I have created an image in your head that suits your personality. I hope it is the first and last thought you enjoy upon waking and sleeping. hell I hope it is in your dreams.
You have your following, enjoy it. It really is all you got. Glad I can make your life miserable.
One more thing, I know you would not not rip anyone else word skills cuz you know they might have a thesaurus like yours and that would even the playing field and you could not be the word bully that you really are. AND then the rest would really see that you are what you really are.
BCO
Your like a rabid dog, you'll never stop. And here's the truth, were you broke down on the road, I'd still stop. But you can bet your last dollar, I would not shake your hand.
Further, to the 10 people who ignore me, I'd stop and help each of you too. And you'd probably never know it was me. But you'd be glad to have have had my help.
IF any would like to hash out the why of your ignore of me I' be glad too.
You might find out that in reality I am someone worthy of your acquaintance.
send me a PM.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. We had fun but I missed my shop and Marilyn missed plants. We've got a couple more years of boat life in us but we're both really looking forward to some house and yard time this summer.
