Title: Miter Box Leaking
Post by: Seangie on March 01, 2015, 01:04:37 PM
Just got my bus back from JB (Eagle Classic Coach) And he did a fantastic job adjusting the suspension and rebuilding the Turbo and fixing my door.

One thing he did come across was that the seals on the miter box are leaking.  He said that the box and gears were in good shape but someone had packed it with grease to keep oil from leaking out the seals.

I would have had him do the repairs on the seals but we ran out of time so I'm going to get it done when I get up to Wilmington, NC.  I'm keeping it full of 80w-90 oil until I get up there.

Where should I get the seals from?  Are the parts easy to find?  Part numbers in the manual are 104-0730-507, 517, 518

Here are some pics from the manual(https://busconversionmagazine.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F15%2F03%2F01%2Fe1e6ecf0d8f8bc49d0614bd31271b8dc.jpg&hash=268802e90793c03aaf30d09b55054d0568c492e0)

Sean thanks for the pictures. Always interesting. The 10S is a super nice bus. You could have a whole family living in the bays on those things. It's a great conversion platform.

Some of the Eagle mitre box did use grease on the outside flanges, they came pre drilled with a 1/8 pipe plug you could remove and install a grease zerk it was the same theory as used on differentials were the gears ran in oil and hubs were greased  .The seals are off the shelf at Napa pulling the yokes and removing the coupling can be a bear sometimes but not has hard as the model for a V8 with the floating shaft.

If the sleeve is wore just change ends if it hasn't been done before then you won't need to chase the sleeves (Jefferson) if it's not leaking JMO I would leave it alone

Clifford - with no grease in the ends the oil drips right out.  Makes a mess going down the road.  I greased the ends back up (zerks are already there) and it keeps the oil in but I'm guessing Ill need to get this miter box rebuilt.

Bruce,

Bought the Trimark 060-1650 RV door handle with deadbolt.  It took a bit of fabrication to make it work but it does work.  Got it off Amazon for about 90$

First time we have had a locking door in a year.
