Title: Still Learning
Post by: Nineforever on February 05, 2015, 11:16:49 AM
Was out with a group of tourists a few nights ago at -30 below in the middle of now where and i could smell smoke , i went out back to the engine and found that the miter box witch drives the squirrel cages on our 102C 8v92T mechanical had seized packed it in . I took off the belt and started it back up it runs perfectly at high idle  it maintains good oil pressure and engine temperature just shy of 160 degrees ... running down the highway it stays below 180 degrees  I guess what im trying to say is it perfect for cold weather operation , what i have been doing in the extreme cold is blocking off the vents and installing sheets of plywood in front  of the shutters and piece of plywood under the engine to keep it in the heat , when idling for more then a few minutes i would stick a flat head screw driver under the fuel pedal set at 1500 rpm to keep the engine heat up and oil pressure up . Ive tested this at temperatures as high as minus - 21 below works perfectly .  Its proved to be a fuel saver and also easier on the engine .  And yes need to watch for warm weather .

Always was exciting to drive alongside the dog bus in the cold on the highway and watch the shutters close!

The needs of the HVAC completely consuming the available engine heat.

Single pane windows? Passengers wearing mitts and hats...

Happy coaching!
