Title: Ran across an engine...
Post by: FrontSideBus on February 04, 2015, 07:50:10 AM
Hey all, I ran across an engine here locally that I wanted to get your opinion on.

It is a Marine 6v92TI rated at 525HP.  It was a factory rebuild and has about 2000 hours on it.  It came out of a fire fighting boat that was just purchased by an organization here locally.  It was removed because the boat is getting some modifications that require a lot more HP.  This engine comes from a reliable source.  They have videos of it running before they removed it.  The boat it was in made a trip from Ft. Myers, FL to the Carolina coast before being trucked here.

Currently I have 6V92TA.  Worth purchasing for an upgrade or backup/parts?

Thoughts?

I would love to have it in HUGGY but I have not figured out how to carry the ocean along to keep it cool.

Hard enough now with the biggest radiator and fan system that will fit in the side of her.

Yeah that's what I figured.  Maybe I could put a hot tub in the back to draw off some of that heat!   8)

The 525 hp 6v92 is a 3000 hr engine not much life left in that one

Detroit also made a 750hp 8V-92TI, and still makes a 14 liter Series 60 at 825hp for marine use. Their 6-71TI had a peak power of 485hp @ 2,500rpm. But, with all marine engines you have endless cold water to cool it, and whether it be a pump, or propeller load, those maximum power loads are produced at the maximum rpm with quick power drop off as the rpm drops.
Still the maximum injector I'd run in a 92 is 9G90 and in a 71 7G80-turbocharged and aftercooled. Good luck, TomC

Just recently went on a bird watching cruise a on boat that had 8V-92TIs.  The first mate said they had been detuned to 450 hp as they were tried of rebuilding them ever other season.

Even if they GAVE it to you, then what?  Like already said better before me, what you have is a marine Detroit.  How $much$ would it cost to $reconfigure$ it for your Bus Conversion?

Also then like already said better before me, the engine may be almost run out?

Probably also you would want to de tune the guts a bunch.  Did marine DD's have different blocks, heads, cams, pistons, etc., that would be even smog legal for you to run?  I dunno.  Just me.
