Title: Oil Pressure Sender
Post by: Tikvah on January 29, 2015, 03:15:05 PM
Twice I've walked into a NAPA (Different states) and asked about an Oil Pressure Sender for my DD 6V92.
They look at me like I've got two heads.  They have no idea what an MCI is (They ask of course), and can't remember what a 6V92 is.  Like it should be a dinosaur

This is a really simple part... I hold it in my hand.  They can read the numbers - then they look at me and shrug their shoulders.

I've gone to eBay and I see lots of them that read 0-100 or 0-80 (My gauge shows 100 at the far right).  I see them with the single wire.

I know I can buy one for about 15 bucks, but I hate to throw away 15 bucks because I got the wrong one.  Then there's the ones that look exactly the same for 40 bucks.  I'm sure if there is one for a hundred then that's the one!

What do I need?

Years ago my dad had an Allis Chalmers tractor that he built with a Dodge 318 engine and a truck four speed and a power take-off.  That was a crazy dangerous machine.

I remember walking into Sears and trying to buy a battery.  I those days you had to ask, you couldn't find one on the shelf.  He was so mad when they started asking about Make, Model, and Year.  He would start out quietly explaining that it won't be in the book.  Well, that was more like a challenge.  They were sure it was there.  So, he would let them dig.
It's a 1957 Allis Chalmers
  Ya, what model?
It doesn't have a model
  Oh, what engine?
Dodge 318
  Oh, it's a Dodge?
No, it's an Allis Chalmers
We don't show one of those.
Ya, I know
I need a battery that's X" x X', left side posts
   What year?

He was fit to grab their throat.

Is the pressure gauge part of the shutdown system ? if so the break pound is the important part they go from 5# to 27# post the number on the sender and I can give you the number they are $25.00 from a DD dealer for the single wire sender

I am ready to reveal the secrets about electric oil pressure gauges and sending units.

12 or 24v.  They work on OHMs resistance.  For our purposes, what we have to worry about after volts is ohm resistance.  There are two popular oil pressure gauges-- one is a half sweep on the gauge and the other one is a full sweep gauge and the sending unit is designed for either half sweep or full sweep ohms.

So look for a a half sweep gauge or full sweep sending unit,  Like Clifford mentioned, there are some two post sending unit-- one is for the no oil pressure sender (idiot light), and the other terminal gives the ohms resistance for the actual oil pressure to the gauge.

I don't know what half sweep or full sweep mean.

I was working in a Cat house about 40 years ago and driving a Willys PU with a Hurricane 6. The oil light wouldn't go out so I went to the shelf and grabbed a single wire unit for a Cat 3280 (if memory serves) and the threads were the same, so I screwed it in and hooked up the wire, It worked just fine. Where I'm going with this is, KISS. Don't make it more difficult than it has to be, just give Cliff the numbers and let the smart man figure it out for you. At least then you know it'll be right hehe.

Very hard to read any numbers.  The only numbers I can find are on the nut
I see:
0007

On the other side I can see there are four numbers above
and 12V below
I can't make out the four numbers. . . maybe 411K

The last NAPA guy was going to great lengths to figure out what kind of gauge I have.  That made no sense to me.  0-100lbs.

Anyway, in case it matters to someone...here it is.

No, I'm not up and going.  I still don't have a sender.
Is the DD 6463584 a part number I can give NAPA or who?

EDIT: Looks like you found a cheaper one while I was looking. Cool!
