I've been offered a Deutz 15KW two cylinder air cooled generator, and so I am trying to find out stuff about them. I suspect it's kind of old, but Deutz has apparently been in business for a long time. Price is right - free - and I would use it for my house so I could dedicate my little generator to the bus and stop having to move it to the house every winter. Any thoughts or links to resources on old Deutz engines and generators?

Thanks. It would mostly be used in winter for emergency power, so keeping cool might be less of an issue that getting it started... There are a couple of other units I can choose from, that were light pole generators. I am letting a neighbour use a large concrete pad I have behind one of my buildings to store some stuff - he is retired but does some rebuilding and brokering of stationary diesels, some marine diesels, and generators. I apparently get access to a boom truck and a fork lift too, if I can fit them into my buildings. We'll see, eyes wide open and all that.

It makes no difference about the age they never improved anything on Deutz I would get it as far away as possible from the house the 2 banger is a loud sucker
There are lots of Deutz farm tractors in our area at home....all air-cooled from what I have heard. Working in dusty dirty conditions much of the time, and they just 'Keep On Farming'!
Use a sufficiently large fan to push air over it, and it will be just fine. Your home generator system won't be subject to anything even close to similar conditions that these tractors see.

Long ago and far away. Bakersfield CA on a oil field service welding truck. I remember having to plus my ears as the gen set, (I think it was a V4?) was very loud. The guy did yell to me that it was a "Dutch" (?) and that it was a diesel as we could smell that. 3600 rpm? Loud. That is all I know.
Didn't Continental Trailways try the V8 in some of their Eagles long ago? They did OK on the flats but died climbing the hills? Smog legal today? Parts? Warrantee? (sp) Dunno that either. HB. How do you spell warrantee? Ahhh ... British speeel chtz. Cousins across the sea separated by language.
Air cooled diesels are loud. Maybe you can barter for a liquid cooled marine generator with a heat exchanger? Although not cheap to fix (what small diesel engine is cheap to fix though?), it would be more quiet.
Any free diesel generator that runs is a good deal. I picked up a free 10kw diesel gen with a Chinese twin cylinder engine this summer. I put a few hundred into getting it running really well. It has 6000 hours on it and the oil pressure is a constant 65 psi. I don't know if I would recommend a Chinese clone diesel engine but this one surprised me how good it looked inside. The cylinders look perfect, great compression, starts easily...... but it ain't no Yanmar!
The only even firing 2 cylinder (4 stroke) that I know of is the Onan 6.0kw DJB either water or air cooled. Otherwise, a 2 cylinder is exactly what it is-a 4 cylinder with 2 cylinders cut off. For house use, it should be fine. And I'm guessing it is an 1,800rpm unit at that size. Good Luck, TomC
I have and have had a lot of the Deutz diesels, from 4 to 12 cly, like them a lot, good engines and parts are not a problem. I bought a new one recently to meet the new California regs so I know they can need cals air quality regs, a little spendy I thought but I think a lot of things are to spendy for what you get 😄

Socialist Implements (Co-op) imported Deutz tractors and painted them Co-op colours. That's old news now because its been close to 40 years since they went bust. I think at the time they were a pretty reliable tractor and as Mark pointed out, all air cooled. If your lights are on and the neighbours are dark they'll probably resent the noise right up until you invite them over to warm up.
There is other options that I might have, this one appealed to me for size and quirkyness, I think. He has several generators, he said I could have whatever I wanted. I am renting him some space and he is downsizing so he may as well give them to me as scrap them, is the underlying message. He has one 100KW unit, but it could run half our town... He is a friend of my wife's, she is quite active in the "charity" community in our area, and he is one of the leaders of that group, spends most of his time figuring out how to give stuff away, free Christmas dinner for over 300 people (literally half our town either showed up to cook, serve or eat...) was the last endeavor.
