Title: 4104 Side Windows
Post by: mung on January 07, 2015, 07:47:19 AM
I am reading Da Book and trying to figure out how the side windows can come out.  According to the instructions it says "Side window is readily removed after opening the window to the emergency release position.  With the aid of an assistant to hold the window, remove only one hinge pin retaining screw from each hinge pin; then remove the pins from the hinges and lower the window.

There isn't a clear picture on this and from what it looks like on the actual bus there are screws on either end of the hinge which I am guessing are the retaining screws they are talking about?  But if that is the case, how in earth would you get the hinge pins out?  The pins would have to be recessed into the hinge for the retaining screws that are on the end of the hinge going down the hole in the hinge to be able to screw in.

Has anyone taken the hinge pin out?  Since I have an early 04 do I maybe have a different setup than Da Book is talking about?

Thanks,
Vern

Vern,

Did you ever get the window out?

Yep and just got it back in.  Took most of yesterday and a good part of the morning, but the first one is done and now I know how to do it.  I don't have the gasket for the main outside frame, but I am thinking I will just calk it back in since the crash bars don't function anyway.

What I ended up doing was unscrewing the hinges from the bus and tilting the top of the window and and lifted it right off of the crash bar tabs, went back in the reverse way.

On the end of the hinge pins you might have  "E" clips as I had in mine. I think if my memory has not failed me again. I took these off with needle nose pliers and drove pins out with punch. It also sounds as if you have to take a screw out for the pin to slide. Good luck.    Larry B

Naa, in 1953 they must have done some fun things.  There are screws on both ends of the pins that don't want to come off.  The screws that hold the hinges to the bus frame are a lot easier to get out and if I have ones that are rotted too bad, they are a lot easier to deal with than the pins would be.  The bonus there is that any damage I do is hidden by the drip rail on the hinge screws where the screws holding the pins in are very visible.
