Post by: siberyd on January 05, 2015, 09:41:45 AM
I had a 4104 owner contact me with a dilemma. Be needs to replace the muffler on his 671 engine, but is having trouble figuring out how to remove them and find replacement parts. Anyone have experience or ideas?

Thanks,

I thought the engine had to come out to replace the mufflers?

One on top of each other?  Interesting, mine are side by side.

My 4104 has a single manifold with two side by side mufflers. I think they can be replaced via the interior hatch (about 12"x 30"). Unbolt from there and drop out the bottom. Attached is the only photo I have.
To save time I'd Call Luke. He will know how to remove them a probably where to get them.

Why do you need the 2 mufflers if the 2 manifold system has been replaced for space or what ? a single 4in outlet is more than adequate for 6L71 n/a engine

Our 4104 had one horizontal muffler on it on back side(towards front of coach). We later went with duals; two short manifolds with two smaller vertical mufflers. Later turboed engine back to one manifold with turbo mounting flange and small muffler underneath. Still have the dual manifolds and mufflers.

Those split manifolds are basically 3-71 manifolds but with a custom angle to them. Good Luck, TomC

I pulled my two up through the hatch over the firewall, a horrible job because the clearance is so close.

I replaced with smaller mufflers from JCW and made my own connections.

The stock mufflers rust out at the top because they are water traps and when they hole they spew fire at the bottom of the engine cover and into the bedroom. It really ruins your day.

Tell him to be sure to replace both.

If it is a single muffler the engine may have to come out.
