Hi Guys, does anyone know how I figure out what hp setting I have on my 8V92 DDEC II. The motor is in an '89 Setra I bought from BK last year. I plan to use the motor in my Scenicruiser and trying to figure out exactly what I have before I pull it for a rebuild. I have a Pro-Link which shows 400hp but the motor runs a lot better than it would if it was actual set at 400hp. Is there a simple way to figure it out, or do I need to take the ECM to the local DD dealer.
BK mentioned he had sold the ECM off the sister bus to Cary and Don over here on BCM, do you guys know how that one is set up, mine is probably the same.
Many thanks,
Dave
Injectors and the turbo will tell you the HP range it has to be between 400 and 450 hp for a DDEC II I bet it is 400 hp the 400 hp had a nice torque range
The pro link should tell you everything a dealer would!

Thanks guys, the reason I was questioning the setting is I have a 440hp mechanical motor mated to a 13 speed roadranger, and the bus just seams to pull a LOT better than the 440. Maybe it is the difference between the auto and the manual that is fooling me.?
Hey Luvrbus, how do I tell what injectors I have, is it easy to see if I pull the valve covers?
Yea they didn't have but 2 different sets of injectors one thing that makes it seems different is the firing order is different than a mechanical engine a 400 hp 8v92 is a good setup
Thanks, I hope to have the motor pulled in the next couple of weeks, so will be able to get a better look at what I have. What should I be looking for on the injectors to tell what I have? Is there a part number or is it more complicated than that.
Clifford (and others) the bus Dave bought from me is the one that out pulled the 435/470 Hp 60 Series in the other bus dad an I drove home from Rexburg, ID when we bought a pkg deal of 3 of them + spare parts as the fleet that had them was converting over to MCI from Setra's (we bought the buses and the shop foreman had his guys round up every Setra part they had and load them in the bays for free, so he didn't have to look at them or find someone to sell them too!)
All the way home from ID I had to kill my cruise in the hills or I'd run over dad!
This bus runs as good or better than the first Setra we had and I know it was either 450 or 475 Hp.
;D BK ;D
When you do that swap Dave what trans are will you be running in that set-up. I've always wondered what hp my 91 prevost 8V92TA has because it runs like a scalded dog. Of course I'm comparing it to a 35 foot v10 gas holiday rambler we had years ago. Keep us updated.
The Setra has an HT748 with retarder that I plan to use. I really liked the way the retarder worked when I drove the bus home last year.
Look at the last 4 numbers on the injectors
4775 injectors with the TV 8513 A/R 1.39 is a 450 hp with 1425 ft lbs of torque
4915 injectors with the TV 8513 A/R 1.23 is a 400 hp with 1150 ft lbs of torque
450 hp is tops for a 8v92 DDEC II without a lot of changing and money
If the Pro/Link say 400 hp that is probably what it is
Thanks Clifford, I will let you know as soon as I pull the covers. I thought I had read somewhere on line about a 475hp DDEC motor, but could have been confusing it with a mechanical motor. You mentioned the different firing order, do you know what benefit that gives over the old mechanical motor? I did a little searching on line this morning and didn't come up with anything.
Dave
If you're redoing your Scenicruiser with the 8V-92TA, you should change the rear end ratio also since the HT series has no overdrive-as compared to the 13spd that has one or two overdrives depending on model. If you're still running 12R-22.5 (485rpm) tires, the 8V-92TA likes to cruise at 1,600rpm. To gear for a 1,600rpm cruise at 65mph, you should use a 3.08 rear end ratio (works out to be 3.04 but 3.08 is what is made). That will give you a 2,300rpm top speed of 92mph. Sounds good to me. Good Luck, TomC
My 8V92 DDEC II was 475 HP or at least the factory sticker on the valve cover said it was. Maybe it is was some special order or something. The engine serial number is 08VF124880 and the model number is 80877828 spec # 51 0348.

You can take one to 475 hp the last run of of the DDEC II could be 475 hp but they had different cams, turbo, injectors and blower I have a 475 HP DDEC II sitting in the shop not many of those are around
Hi Clifford, I see quite a few mechanical 92's advertised at 475hp, and thought that was just an injector change. Do you know what drives the need for the cams, turbo, blower, etc to get 475hp out of the DDEC motor. Just trying to learn the differences, since I have one of each.
Same on a mechanical more too it that the just injectors a mechanical 475 hp has the good stuff and forget about it if the timing is not 14 degrees BTC I see a lot of 8v92 sold as 475 hp that are not even close just smokers, I can get the group numbers later today for you
Understand, that makes sense now. Would appreciate the numbers, thanks
There are quite a few 500 hp DDEC II's out there - FWIW
