Title: MC5C rear axle seals installation
Post by: lostagain on December 27, 2014, 05:27:53 PM
Installing new axle seals this afternoon on rear axle of 5C. It's been a few weeks since I took them out, and I don't have a photographic memory like some of you guys... Should have taken pictures. The manual is unclear on it.

They fit in a retainer that bolts on the back of the hub. Do they go on the bearing side of the retainer, or on the outside of it? I tried both sides. It fits on either side. Looks like it should go on the inside, bearing side, but when I bolt the flange/retainer onto the hub, the seal presses onto the inner bearing and prevents it from spinning. If I put it on the outside, it seems too far away from the bearing, and looks like it will be too far up the spindle.

Does anybody remember how it goes in?

Thanks. That section of manual is the same as mine for the 5. The 5s, 7s, 8s and 9s are essentially mostly the same buses.

Anyway, after thinking about it all night, and looking at the fuzzy pictures in the manual, I think I got it right. The seal goes on the outside of the seal retainer. The seal is stamped "bearing side" on one side, so there is no confusion there at least. The confusing part for me was that the seal fits on either side of the retainer.

That is the trouble with being a half mechanic at home. Compared to a Greyhound tech who does that every day with his eyes closed.
