You guys with nice pickups I haven't bought a new pickup since 2000 so my wife told me to buy me a nice pickup it will probably be the last one
Long story but short version I wanted a 4 door with a Allison and diesel engine I fill out the form on the internet and get a quote back from the dealer no frign way am I going to pay almost 60 grand for a pickup do they really sell for that much ?
I was just at the L.A. Auto show and Ford had a F350 4X4 crew cab dually with 6.7 Diesel and automatic (Ford's 6spd automatic is built bigger than the Allison) that had a sticker around $75K!
Take a look at the Dodge 1500 with the VM based 3.0 V-6 diesel and ZF based 8spd automatic. Well over 20mpg. One guy cruised the entire width of the U.S. in one of these pickups, and at 60mph averaged 41mpg. Pretty efficient. The V-6 engine is so good, Gale Banks is making hop up parts for it and states it is strong enough to get 600hp out of it. Dodge is selling so many, they are doubling production next year. It is the only pickup I know you can get 4 corner air suspension. They sell for around $40k. Good Luck, TomC

:o !!!
In my search for a 4 door dually (just looked at Ford/Dodge) I couldn't find a decent one less than 60
If you are going for a 1/2 ton, the F150 is hard to beat, in my opinion. I LOVE my truck. I have a 2011 quad cab, and it is nice.
However, I have started to take sideways glances at the new Dodge 1500 that TomC mentioned. With that kind of fuel mileage, I could be very tempted. One of my buddies has one, and he really likes it.
If you want a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel, tricked out, look at paying upwards of 60K. If you aren't hauling much, go for a 1/2 ton, and get it loaded.
Dodge is out of the question for me I want nothing to do with Fiat at any price it goes back a long way on a piece of Fiat equipment I purchased
JMO Buy a nice 1/2 ton if you want to haul some sheets of plywood and a bass boat. If you need to haul a large camper or yacht, skip the overpriced light duty trucks and get a medium duty truck. You can get a International 4700 hauler for half the price of a F450.

ROFL. I give my buddy heck all the time for driving a Fiat. I will NOT let him forget that his truck is powered by a little tiny car.
Then F150 all the way. My next one will be Eco boost. I have driven several now, and like them.
Luvrbus,
Bought a new 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 with the Hemi. I bought it because I felt the Hemi would go the way of the first (301/331/354/392) and second generation of Hemi motors (426) - that is out of production. Well they are still hanging on. I love my "old" Dodge. It has 133,500 on the Odo and climbing. Only problem I had was a broken valve spring (the tach does not show a red line so I have routinely wound her tight). It was within the first 100,000 miles thus covered by warranty. Of course back in 2003 Mercedes was still involved with Chrysler Corp. Now the Hemi is thirsty when hauling around 5,800 lbs and with four wheel drive it gets about 16 on the interstate and drops to around 12 in town. I've been dragging it behind the bus since March of 2007.
I love my truck and so does the wife. We like to get out on the open road, turn off the radio and just listen to that Hemi humming a sweet tune. Nothing like it.
Will
I just love my 81 vw diesel rabbit pickup ! I know not gonna tow with it but I do put 25 40lb bags of coal in it and it drives same with or without the weight. Avg 50 - 60 mpg . Hell of a toad . Gen truck n of course bus all diesel with my transfer pump all runs ... Had to throw that in. Heck most peeps look at the truck just as much as the bus both antique plates . Next yr bus gonna say hound and truck gonna say wabbit uno wabbit chasin the hound hehe
Following what Will has said, I recently went from my 1500 Dodge to my current 2500 with a Cummins and 6 speed manual. The price was ridiculous, but you can either spend it and enjoy what you have earned, or let someone else enjoy your money when you are gone.
Hey Will, 19 on the highway, 16 around town. Time to move up.
GM owns half that VM company that is making the little diesel, but haven't put it in anything in North America yet. I read that Banks has been contracted to do the military version for the US military. If I was a Dodge guy I would not know which way to turn, or what sand pile to put my head in. A Dodge built by Fiat with an engine from a company owned by GM. I went with Ford, if only because my sister is an engineer there, she is working on the new Mustang now.
FWIW, after both GM and Dodge trucks, the Ford (2005 F250 PSD) is the best actual truck, in my opinion. GM was the worst (I had three or four of them, little sister was working for GM at the time so I got a family discount back when that actually meant a good deal), the Dodge was fine but man that Hemi was thirsty... The thing about the Ford is that everything actually works, and doesn't piss me off all the time, which can't be said of the other two. Just my experience, of course. This truck could do me in yet...
Brian
My money would be aimed at a nicely restored 1979 F 250 Crew Cab, Lariat edition, big block 460....at 1/3 the cost of new I'd have plenty left for gasoline :)
While we are talking trucks.... ;D. This is why I love working on the computer. You can work from anywhere. I actually had my laptop and 24in external monitor set up on my tool box. It was fantastic.
I have owned Fords with 7.3 diesels they were good I had Fords with the 460 gas 8 miles to the gal,I had a Dodge with a V10 lol I don't want another of those, my daughter had a 6.0 diesel in a Ford that was a piece of junk.
If I buy it will probably be a GMC or Chevy they are so quite on the inside compared to the Ford or Dodge,I am still looking but my pride won't let me pay 60 grand for pickup that will depreciate $20,000 when you drive it home.
The best and most trouble free pickup I ever own was the 88 Jeep Eliminator it lasted me and 2 grandsons 311,000 miles still running on the original engine they still use it around the farm

Have you driven a 6.7 Ford? They're pretty quiet. Personally I think a diesel should sound like a diesel and I love the sound of the older Cummins but I'd never actually own a Dodge. I always figured driving a Dodge was like making love to your sister - it might feel OK at the time but you wouldn't want anyone to know about it.
The new pricing is just plain stupid as far as I am concerned. I looked hard and long but just couldn't bring myself to buy even a 6.4 and the 6.7s were flat out of the question. So I ended up with a 2006 6.0 from a guy I kind of know. I've had it for close to 18 months now and it hasn't blown up ..... yet. And for all you guys who say "just buy a gasser" - phooey to you - its just not the same. Some of us like paying 1.3x for the fuel, 2.5x for the oil changes, 3x when they blow up and love the stink when they start up. There's no explaining good taste. ;D
I have 150 k on my 2001 Ford 350 crew cab dually 4X4. It has the v10 and has been one of best vehicles I have owned. So much so that I just bought a 2005 with the 6.0 Diesel. I have read all the warnings about the 6.0 and figure that this new truck with 114 k on it has had most of the known issues dealt with or this one did not suffer from some of the known problems. At any rate, I paid nearly 19 k for the truck. Around here a good used tunner is hard to find because the ranchers use them up before they come up for sale. Had to go to Utah to find mine. Looks like there may be decent trucks in Texas, but it still costs a bunch of money for anything with less than 75,000 on the odometer. Tested a couple of newer Dodges and the seats were Horrible. Thought I would need a new spine after about 1/2 hour in one. Nothing against Chevy, but I have loved this big Ford so much I am hoping to hit the jackpot a second time.
WOW! 75k?, It all got screwed up when we started eating outside and going to toilet inside.
Now its a totaly different meaning and obvious need to have a "bed" in the pickup.
slides for tools and bunks i guess.
On just a side note though 4x4 Chevy Big Block for home w/extended cab in 3/4, Chevy Diesel for Work with club cab in 3/4, Dually 1ton for 30ft cattle or bobcat work trailer hauling.
Merry Christmas
Well, I've been a Ford man for about 25 years, but I've been tempted to look at Dodges. My current truck is a 95 F150. I paid $22K and it was used with 2000 miles on it. It's at 213K and starting
to cause me some pain. Just had to put new brakes on the rear which turned into a 2 month ordeal due to a little known automatic adjustment mechanism in the parking brake foot pedal. Today I
started it and it was running really rough going to the post office. Had to pull the distributor cap and scrape the carbon off the contacts. Other than that, it's been pretty darn reliable but the mileage
sucks at about 14. It's rusted now to the point of no return. I'd like to get it to 250K, but honestly if I get another software job, I may have to let it go early.
I am intrigued by that 41 mpg mentioned in an earlier reply! The job would be 100 miles a day commute.
Am Ford with the diesels, no longer want the Navistar, the new Ford 6.7 makes the better setup, have two! Due for a new one, all F350 SRW with service body, trade at95k miles.
Dodge is no longer using the Cummins, so guessing Fiat will be the new diesel for Dodge. :'(
Always buy fancy Lariet models, loaded, pays big at resale time, new bed on clean truck with warranty remaining. I tow a 04 F150 5 spd V6 elcheapo.
Do what works

Fiat like Chrysler has changed so much over the years, that saying you don't like Fiat because of what happened years ago is like saying I'd never buy a Ford because they built the Edsel, or GM because of the Vega. Good Luck, TomC
Anyone with a Ford 6.0 can PM me if they want, I can give you a primer on what to know, what to watch for and how to do it. I learned a lot about them fast after I bought one, in self defence. I like mine a lot.
Brian
LOL the US stopped Fiat from importing their crap back in the late 80's and because Libya was the largest stock holder in Fiat now they own a car company here in the US.I got shafted by Fiat it has nothing to with GM and the Vega or Ford and a Edsel it is because I had 1/2 mil of equipment that was no use because of parts availability and service so no Dodge for me
I just asked for prices I live close enough to dealers to drive and see which one is being worked on the most and ask questions I don't want a truck you remove the cab to change a simple turbo so I am looking at GMC or Chevy but I do not like the price of any and all overloaded with the emissions controls
Clifford, our 08 Siverado 1500(dearly departed :'( ) was rated for 21MPH when we bought it new. As of last week I consistently got just under 24mpg. Our 04 Dodge got 18mpg, If you as much as put an empty Styrofoam coffe cup on the tow ball it got 14. Dodge is out with us, reason being mainly fit and finish. After a year the squeaks and rattles would drive us crazy, Very poorly made in my opinion and this does not apply to the diesels by the way ;) We were thinking next year on another new Chevy and you know ours would pull two 92 series on your trailer. Or give ford a shot FYI YMMV. I'll say the chevy 1500 for best value all around. :) :)
Oh by the way, we all know real diesels don't have glow plugs ;D
So what will they call the Ram when they dump the Dodge name next year according to Fiat?
I had the 2006 V8 Gas version of the Tundra Access cab long bed and would never get another American made truck again after that. Sold it with 345,000 miles on it and still going strong. Best riding and comfortable vehicle bar none I have had ever. I put tires and brakes on it and changed the fluids. two tuneups the whole time I had it.
Come 2016, the option list for the next-gen Tundra will include a Cummins 5.0-liter turbo diesel. That oil-burner is predicted to be rated at 300+ horsepower and, in true diesel form, more than 500 lb-ft of torque.
I'm with you Clifford. I'm just not going to spend $60K on a pickup. I bought a '99 GMC crew cab dually w/ the 6.5 new and that was almost $30K. It made me a good truck but I said back then that's the last one..... too cotton picking much money for a pickup!
Besides, I could buy another nice bus!!
TOM
I saw a Nissan with that engine at a dealer here on show so Toyota is going to have it now ? wonder what happen to Nissan
It truly is funny, the different luck we all have had with different pickups, for me, the GM line always needs parts in the cab, knobs, switches, dash controls AC/Heater/Defroster , transmissions, the 6.2 Diesel was OK for 250 k miles, the body was a non stop fixer up from new. Never had a dodge pickup, they seem to have had very poor luck with tranys, brakes, frame, etc, but loved the Cummins part, being a Cummins Dealer might have something to do with that. But this new 6.7 Ford Diesel is a clear winner for our business, Have run the (2)7.3, (3)7.3 PS, (2)6.0, (2)6.4, now two 6.7. No reason to change yet, I also hated the Edsel :)

Yep those two are both doing testing with it. they always try to one up each other.
Specifically a half-ton, short wheel base, step side pickup? Small block V8 with P/S, P/B, granny 4-speed with factory A/C? Maybe a tilt steering wheel and electric windows?
Anywhere between $2500 for a basic runner up to and including over $10,000 for a very very nice street rod type restoration. A whole lot $cheaper$ than something new.
Plus ... plus ... plus ... you can pull that lousy gasoline Chevy small block V8 and install an excellent, proper, boss, bitchin, noisy, leaky, smoggy Detroit Diesel 353N three banger!
One hundred whopping horsepower! Two hundred bone crushing foot pounds of torque! You can then also install a real JAKE BRAKE! A T-5 3.97 5 speed tranny will work too.
Much fun. Doable. Very cheap as street rat rod pickup trucks go. That and you can upset all your neighbours and have fun with regression and stuff. Works for me!
HB of CJ (old coot) :) :) :) How long that tranny will last with frequent Jake Brake use is debatable. Maybe a long time, maybe not long at all. Heavier trannys will work.
I bought a new 2014 2500 Ram Longhorn diesel about a year ago. I had to order it to get 2 wheel drive. $52,000. I am getting 18.3 around town and 14 towing a 13,000 lb trailer. I like the truck but as I tell folks when asked. I drove Fords ( gas engines) for 30 years and never set foot inside a service dept. After having the Ram for 6 months I had the Dodge service department in the speed dial of my phone. I hope they have the bugs out but who knows. I did not buy Ford because I was scared of the engine. They have not had great luck with any of the diesels they build them self in my opinion. All of the new trucks on the market are way over priced and way more complicated than they need to be and all that complication is what creates most of the problems.
Hi Clifford, beware of the 5.4ltr ford engines, they spit out spark plugs, mostly on F150s, tom, lvmci...

I thought Navistar made the 6.0 and 6.4 and Ford just started making their own again with the 6.7?
I don't know who makes it I thought it was Ford but was told it was Navistar who ever made it cost Ford a lot of money , the made in Mexico scares me on the Ford Diesels that is why I leaning towards the GMC the Duramax is American made
I know it's not a pickup, but my 2006 Jeep Liberty had a 4 cyl VM Motori Diesel in it, and it ran great. I sold it when it had about 165K on it, and now I wish I had it back! Towing a car on the tow dolly is a royal pain in the butt :'(

I have a 2007 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Long Bed PreRunner TRD 2wd with the 4.0L V6 and 5-spd automatic, coming up on 158K miles.
Loaded for work or empty, it gets 16 in town and 20/21 highway, has since new. Paid $21K after they gave me $6K for my old Tacoma in trade.
Other than front brakes, which is understandable based on my work use, it's lived up to Toyota's reputation for reliability.
IIRC, it has a 5K hitch on it, but it might be a 3K. Had no trouble towing the Jetta home on a dolly after it's purchase.
One feature I really like about the Tacoma is the way the rear seats fold completely flat. Since I often carry parts & a small hand tool tote back there, the fact that it's flat was/is a big plus for me. When I was shopping for a double-cab truck, that was something I checked out on all the available units, and Toyota was the only one with this feature.
If Toyota had offered a diesel in the Tacoma, I probably would have spent the extra $$. Their homeland units have an excellent reputation.
FWIW & HTH. . .
;)
I just picked up a 1993 Ford F350 4x4 crew cab long bed. The truck only has 127,000 original miles and is in excellent shape. 7.3 diesel, no computer, no turbo and best of all no smog checks!!!! Total should be around $3,500 cash. ;D
Can spend a lot of money on fuel from the money I will save on smog checks, insurance on a $65,000 current plastic model and simply will have to get use to cloth seats >:(
As to half ton Diesel Pickups-do I want an American made pickup with an Italian based engine (Dodge 1500 Ram with the 3 liter V-6)? Or do I want a Japanese made pickup with an American made engine (both Nissan and Toyota with the new Cummins 5.0 V-8)? Or do I want a GM made Chevrolet Colorado mid sized pickup with their new 2.8 liter 4 cylinder Diesel due out later in 2015?
The new Ford F150 with 2.7 liter or 3.5 liter Eco-boost V-6's are interesting-but I'm a hopeless Diesel head. Good Luck, TomC
In 1985 I had one employee when it came time for me to buy pickups he choose a Dodge D-50 turbo diesel he drove that thing for 300,000 miles and loved it
I recall it had a small Mitsubishi diesel that was a good engine they were only around for a couple of years I believe the entire truck was a Mitsubishi with just a Dodge badge
I get dizzy when I read numbers the size of the ones you guys are throwing around.
A year and a half ago I spent $2000 on an '85 Chevy Scottsdale 3/4 ton 4wd. 4 speed automatic. Traded in at the Chevy dealership where my son is sales manager by the guy who bought it new. He replaced the engine two years before he traded. This summer I spent $700 on a top notch trans rebuild. Had a local shop do the R/R and I hauled it about an hour away to a place that specializes in race car transmission work. I put a new (not rebuilt) starter on it in August coming back from Elkhart with my bus windows and tanks other goodies. It still needs both power window regulators and nothing else. This truck is almost rust free, but it will eventually need cab corners.
It rides and drives like new, will go anywhere and it hauls or tows anything I need. I realized while reading this thread that I can fix everything on it — twice — and still have only a fraction of the money you guys are talking about invested.
And everywhere I go, guys say. "Whoa, nice truck." Works for me on every level.
Best of luck with all those piles of dollars.
Jim H
I bought a 82 Rabbit PU last summer with seized engine and a pile of spare parts. I've driven it about 6000 miles. Current fuel CPM is $ .10 total CPM including insurance, engine rebuild, new shocks and original purchase is $ .68. ;D
Great towed.
I like HB's suggestion too. Clifford could build a pickup exactly to suit for half the money and it would be probably 10 times the truck. I thought a long time about putting a 6V53 in a Chevy. I just don't have the time.......

Cash's (6yr old grandson) Just bought a used 650 ford 4 door 4 wheel drive. ISB 5.9 Cummins--Jacked up . It is over 6 ft to bottom of window sill. 21 inch tv and all the off the wall things you can think of.. Main purpose= makes a rolling bill board for their mulch manufacturing business. It will prob just pull light construction equip and mulch blower. We have had cost discussion lately with finical and a few friends. There was a run of the mill chev pickup diesel on the show room floor. $57,000 next to a low end but brand new 2015 corvette. $61,600.. Something not right here! My first home in a nice neighborhood was $7900. a new car then was under $1800. I don't understand the disproportionate change. Ever seen a vehicle go up in value? (I know the exceptions. So Cash gets to ride in his monster truck to first Grade! Bob
What is this deal the dealer is offering another 2400 off if I financed, I never heard of that before it makes no sense the banks are paying about nothing and this guy wants you to save your money and pay them 7% lol I was born at night but not last night

That is what a buddy of mine did. He financed it (it was only 38K), but after he made the mandatory two or three payments, he paid the truck off. Saved him about 2K. I just pay cash for my vehicles. Mine cost pretty close to his, but they didn't have the finance incentive, so I wrote a check.
I am debt free and want to keep it that way, like the old musician once said to much music to play and so little time left .We have friends with nice bank accounts and think they are doing good setting on the cash and owe 3 or 4 times the amount they have stashed
Its like the people who think getting a rebate for something is a good thing when they have just financed it and then they get the cash in hand. Hello you just financed a rebate. I crack up when they then tell you what a good deal they got????????
A good deal is drop the price that much and I pay cash!.... I call 3 or 4 places ask for the sales manager or owner. Then you tell them that this is what you want color, model, options. You tell them you are paying cash and expect them to make some profit but you also want a great deal. You also tell them you are calling other dealer with the same thing. If anything is different you will go somewhere else because you want to do the apple to apples thing. Then tell them to call you back or you call them in 45 minutes and you want their best deal.
They have one chance if they beat around the bush you go elsewhere. If you go with who ever and go in to sign papers, look them over well to make sure nothing has changed like an added on extra care policy or extended warrantee, etc. Look over the vehicle to make sure it is what you want and test drive it at that point. Right before you give them the cash or check ask if they can throw in a bed liner (doesn't cost them much to do this)or something like that. You will get it too. ;D
Dave
Dealers typically get a kickback when they sign up a customer for financing. That is why you can often get a better deal if you finance with them. Everyone thinks you get the best deal with cash, but you don't much of the time. The dealer makes money when you finance so they can lower the price of the vehicle a bit.
I know a lot of folks who take the financing to get a better deal and then pay off the loan within a few weeks.
If you are concerned that driving it home will cost $20,000, then get one that someone has already driven home. I'm sure there must be some with around 10k on them that you would hardly know it still wasn't new.
The trade-in value might go down $20K but the retail used sell price is about $3K below new retail. The dealers know that they need their margin no matter what. Last car I bought I financed for two years at 1%. I had the cash in the bank earning around 5% (in my investment account) so I just set up monthly withdrawals and kept my credit score high... The only thing was that I was freaked out by having $1,000 a month car payments - shades of being poor when I was young (and poor now, what goes around comes around)
Brian
They say the average car or pickup payment is over 700 bucks a month now, doesn't seem that long ago I could pay my house, car, pickup all the power, gas and insurance for 1/2 that amount and save money
Every time I walkpast a $3800.00 Refrigerator at the big box store I think about the price of a new Corvette 30-40 years ago ...
Yep what was your paycheck back then also.
New 1st mustangs were 1,900.00 8) Convertible was 2,100.00
The very first one was put in a Chicago showroom and a Concrete truck missed the corner and wiped it out too, LOL :D
Jon,
Every time I go to the local Dodge dealer for services, in my truck or either of our two vans, the salesman that worked the deals in 2003 always says the same thing, "Will, its time to move up. The new trucks ride so much better, fuel mileage is up, let's trade!" He always gets the same answer, "But I just LOVE my truck. If I wanted something that rides so much better I'd by a car."
Dave After 55 years in the world I am back in the 1960 on the amount of money I take home. On my social security payment every month after they take out all the insurance, and every thing else they"THE GOVERNMENT WANTS".and paying all the taxes on every thing own and buy. I end up with about the same as I was making in the 60's.
If I had not worked long hours and invested good. I would be on welfare like half of the people in the usa.

Course you could get the ultimate in pickups-a Freightliner SportChassis. M2 crew cab with custom aluminum pickup body with 350hp Cummins ISL and 1250lb/ft torque with an Allison 3000 6spd automatic, air brakes, air suspension, and only $130,000. Good Luck, TomC

I remember the first week I bought home a $100 paycheck. I told my wife we didn't even know how to spend that kind of money!
We were quick learners though!! ;D ;D
TOM
I remember going to the grocery store with my mom and she would fill up the back of our 57 Plymouth station wagon and it would only cost $27. The other day i came out of the grocery store with 2 small bags and it was $94. ???
I was working at a Gas station and we only needed 40.00 in change to open in the morning. Gas was .49 cents a gallon and cigarets were .15 cents a pack. Gave maps away for free and sold Oil, fuses, tire changes and patching. Water and air was free. He made money off the back bays. I made 42.00 a week and could use the tools and lifts at work.
I will start SS this next month and finally be rich!.....Yesss ::)
Started in a gas station when I was 14.....they paid me in hotdogs and soda...and let me go to the dirt track on Saturday.... said I was 16 and got into the pits... ;D
