Passed a truck stop in Minnesota yesterday. Regular gas was $2.45 and diesel was $3.95. Man, nobody and I mean nobody gives a s#$t about the middle class anymore.

They've been using the old "it's being bought for home heating oil" excuse to collude on the price again in the North.  Here in NC we had a tiny hiccup in the price drop when we had the first cold snap but the little independent guys undercut the big guys (who would *love* to see $3.95 diesel fuel) and the prices have since been falling, in step with the drop in crude oil prices.

What doesn't seem to get to most people is that if diesel prices are high, it costs farmers more to grow/harvest food, it costs trucks more to deliver *everything* in the economy, it costs more move wholesale items around.  Then everybody in the big companies want's "fuel surcharges" and they walk away happy -- everybody is happy, except for small transportation companies like small truckers (owner-operators or small companies) who can't pass on prices and the ordinary people in the country who are paying these inflated costs that are basically a tax that doesn't go to the government but goes to the big oil companies.  And nobody seems to care about the real people.

I was on an airline flight from London back to the US (one of the first cheap "deregulated" airlines like Laker etc.) about 1978 and Jerry Brown was about three rows behind me with a bunch of his toadies.  He did not quit talking (mostly about himself) for the whole 7 hours.   After about 5 hours, I would have been happy to have done the State of California a favor and shot him three times.

Diesel prices are higher now in Minnesota than when gas was still over $3 a gallon.  Diesel prices spiked as high as $4.29 and are down to $3.79 at one station.  Diesel prices had been $3.59 in early October.  The other day I briefly considered getting a diesel VW, but then remembered how ridiculous diesel prices are.  I would have to get double the mileage of a gas car to really make sense with the extra costs.

$3.20 here in southern NC (although it varies a lot).  Nearby in SC (where they don't try to tax people to death), the best price I've seen is $3.09.  They're just hosing you, Brian.

Sitting here with a full tank (210 gals) that cost me over 4 a gal last year and now I can't even use it cause the roads are iced over and winds broke 90 MPH today. (not a tail wind-I coulda used that) Am I feeling a little frosted? Yeah, you betcha! I was hoping by this time I would be taking advantage of those low prices and parked in a warm place. NOT!
Okay, I vented, sorry Cliff, you can have the thread back.

I will bite. What's keeping you up in the cold? You in Canada somewhere, and did they take your passport?

Our price just went down and I am thinking of filling my tank(s) (as many as I can find).

BTW, today's special price $419.38 USD/gal. At Pembina, ND it's $3.92 USD/gal
GasBuddy.com reports prices in Grand Forks, ND range from $3.99 to $4.29 so we are not too far off.

Maybe I can do what  CN rail was doing a couple of years ago. They would have Cenex (not their real name ;) come up to Winnipeg, buy a tanker full of diesel, export it out of country (next to zero tax), switch trucks leave the US (exported as heating oil, again minimal tax), truck it back to Winnipeg and dump it in the storage tanks at CN's rail yard in Winnipeg. Sometimes they would even be too lazy to switch trucks. Their net gain is about 50% of the cost of local diesel but the exact same product. Hmmmm.

We planned on being out of here end of October but the govt talked me into staying until the end of Nov. Kept telling the wife it wouldn't be a problem and then the day we were set to hit the road it snowed. Okay, I can wait a few day while the missus chews on me about not listening to her. But then the snow turned to freezing rain, which was supposed to clear off and just stay cold. Now it's frozen mist and I'm watching pickups slide down the road. Are you familiar with the Columbia River Gorge? I've become intimate with it and not in a good way.... LOL We figured it would be a better route than trying the passes. I put new rubber on it last year, I wonder if they can be studded? Well the winds are down to 30 MPH today and the temp is supposed to hit 30 too, so things might be looking up by this weekend.

Every state in the region is paying about what we are paying in Minnesota.  Probably the old winter blend/heating oil excuse though almost nobody heats with oil here.

I tell you what is funny the guy died last but Earl Holding owned Sinclair Oil and a few miles down the road he has Little America Truck stop the highest priced fuel in Wy $3.79 today so much for high transportation cost being the reason

well I have been working on Long Island all summer and now fall. Diesel is down from 4.40 gal to 4.00  you can find it cheaper if you look will see how it is in Jersey and Pa this weekend. its been at 4.00 off the island as an avg. figuring it should be at 3.75 and be very happy if its lower. I think .50 state tax in NY.

Dinah is snowed in as well in Pa. the snow followed by thaw and freezing rain is a killer you cant get rid of it if its not in the sun.

Dave, I have friends who live in the Hudson Valley, northwestern Mass., and near Quebec City.  I drive up several times a year and I'm always amazed to go along I-84.  On my last trip (late Sept.), diesel in PA was posted @ 3.89, four miles away in the corner of New Jersey (right at the Port Jervis exit), it was $3.44, and not 25 miles away in NY, it was $4.29.  There is something fishy about prices in the North - more than just the incredible tax load.

Diesel prices have always been sky high in New York any time I have checked the prices there.  It has been a decade since I drove a diesel vehicle into New York state, but I avoided buying any fuel there.

Hey Ned, I would love to do that but it wont be this year. I just got back from delivering a boat down to St Maarten and took longer than we thought. I have to make up the time best I can and make the moolah.  Bruce, that's the sweet spot for diesel on 84 lol. The only issue is its at the bottom of that big hill going east and you cant get a running start out of Jervis. That seems really low for diesel, Pa and NJ have been catching up to NY.  I always take 84 out of Scranton on the run back to the Island to avoid the highway robbery at the GW bridge.

Hi, Dave,

I wonder what you thought of St Maarten.

Since boat delivery and captaining a boat is such a close-knit community, I wonder if you know my good friend, Kevin Schmid?

He is a wonderful guy, a lot younger than me, though.

Ros

Paid in L.A. today $3.259/gallon for Diesel. At the highest, I once paid $5.259/gallon. I'd like to see another $1.00/gallon drop in price. Good Luck, TomC

$3.25 in California of all places?  We really are getting raked over the coals here in Minnesota with diesel prices.  Typically, western Nevada and California have had the highest diesel prices on my entire yearly trip although Minnesota seems to be catching up pretty quickly.

I would like to see it lower but if drops to low they are going to tax it big time then when someone in the mid east breaks a leg here we go at 5 or 6 bucks a gal

I personally think they are driving the oil prices down to stop all the drilling in the US it seems to be working the rig count this month is only +3 and Canada is a -16 for this month

I've thought that for a while, too.  The main driver in this Saudi Arabia - we passed them in production earlier in the year and they didn't like it A BIT!

Clif that's exactly what they are doing, the Saudis have indicated as much. If the government would stop with all the regulations designed to discourage drilling here we would be in a better position to compete with them and the oil companies could still make some money.

Yes but then the politicians who make the laws to not use our oil unless we can sell it overseas for a lot more money while they invest in overseas oil to make a lot more for themselves would not be able too, HELLO  :o
