Title: New Exhaust Systems & EGR Engines
Post by: Rich (Prevost) on December 20, 2006, 02:52:58 PM
Big changes are in the final testing & implementation stages at Prevost. To meet & exceed the new gov't standards on exhaust emissions Prevost has a new Muffler System that acts as a "pollution scrubber". Eliminating soot & other emisions. The exhaust will also now go up through the roof....The new "exhaust scrubber" unit will be above the rh rear side service door. And has a creative "Vent" instead of a pipe that will be on the top of the coach. Invisible from the ground. It will eliminate the "Tornado" "dust storm effect that happens when an older coach pulls onto a dirt surface with the exhaust pipe facing the ground.

The unit at certain intervals injects & ignites diesel fuel to turn the soot into an ash. It actually traps the ash in the unit & has to be cleaned every 250,000 to 400,000 mi. Dramatically reducing pollutants put into our air.....My company has done a lot of research & development to create an amazing product.

Rich- this is the system that all trucks will have also.  Any truck with Cummins, Detroit, Mercedes, Volvo, Mack, International will use the combination of a Catalyst with particulate trap that has to go through a regenerative cycle anytime the particulate trap gets to full of soot and has to burn the soot down to ash.  When enough ash has collected in the particulate trap, it has to be removed and cleaned.  Detroit/Mercedes uses a washing method with water, while all others will use a vacuum method.  I predict it will be an exchange program.
Caterpillar uses just a particulate trap and when a regenerative cycle needs to be done, they inject additional fuel and air right after the turbo and light it off with a spark plug.  We affectionately turm this as the flame thrower.  Caterpillar always has to be different.

The main reason that Prevost and I guess others are putting the particulate trap high up, is that it is larger than the muffler.  Also during regeneration cycle, the exhaust is very hot coming out of the pipe, so the up exhaust is logical.  Just don't park under a tree.  Good Luck, TomC

Rich i read where Prevost was not going to offer a 60sDD in their buses after next year but only the Volvo VED16 because MB won't offer the Volvo engine in its Freightliner trucks have you got any information about this yet.

I could not imagine that Prevost would stop offering the DD engines......I heard some months back that they were testing some other options (alternatives). But the the Series 60 was definitely going to be the engine of choice. Heard possibilities of Volvo & Detroit Diesel doing some "joint ventures". But nothing has been established.....I will forward to Robert Hitt (Prevost Engine Guru) and see what response I get......I will let you know. I know that  Cat & Cummins have really wanted to get into Prevost.....
