Title: 4104 whistle on tank
Post by: mung on September 26, 2014, 10:21:23 AM
So if the whistle on the tank isn't working and the PO thought that he ran out of fuel when he clearly didn't, and after that the engine was lugging at high RMP.  Could that all be a clogged vent tube?  If so is it OK to run with the cap cracked until I can get the tube cleared out?

Couple of thoughts, If you crack the tank cap and it runs fine you shouldn't have any issue except I would make sure you have a rag or something over the filler to keep stuff out.  But I might also suspect that the fuel filter could be partially plugged if the fuel level got down to the point where the gunk was sloshing around the inside of the tank.  But, it might not be a fuel issue at all, are you sure it isn't an air issue IE air filter or emergency shut off or ???

I believe the whistle is to let you know when you are getting full of fuel. not to let air in.

i do nod think the cap is air tite when shut. at least not on huggy.

Yup whistle is to let you know when you are close to full when pumping fuel.  It is located in the fill tube so with the cap closed it would not be a vent to the outside.  I have had tinnitus since 1970, haven't had a moment of silence in 44 years.......

I also have tinnitus-but it is at 12,000hz-also where my hearing drops off. With it being so high, it doesn't really bother me.

My whistle on the fuel tank begins about 5gal before full. I've learned that when the whistle starts to sputter down, turn off the nozzle-or else it may belch fuel back at you. Good Luck, TomC

Yes mine is more ringing than a whistle and I blame it on the loud drummers I used to play with.  Fuel filters are brand new.  Didn't have any issues with the cap opened, but don't know if I would have had an issue with it closed either.

My tinnitus is from being a seven mile sniper when I was young - I served the guns in the artillery.  On my bus the whistle has a one way flapper valve, so that it isn't really for letting air back in, just out.

Mine is from 13 +1/2 months in the infantry in Viet Nam. Right is ear worse due to an M-16 being fired about 2 ft. from my ear. Each ear ring/buzzes at a different tone and level and some times increases or decreases in volume. About 3 years ago though i started hearing birds chirping like a flock was in a tree either getting settled in for the nite or waking up for the day.....That comes and goes for a couple of weeks or months at a time. Worst time of day for it is at nite when i am trying to read or type or go to sleep. Took years to learn to live with it,.....there were times that i didn't think that i would be able to. Last time i took a hearing test i told the gal about the tinnitus and after the test she told me that even though i have a lot of hearing loss she was surprised how much/well i had compensated for it.

Getting back to the topic,  :)  Lugging is when the rpm is too low for the gear you are in.  Don't see how you could be lugging at high rpm.

Sputtering was more like it.  But it may be fixed.  Didn't happen to me.
