Title: Annual inspection tomorrow...
Post by: bevans6 on September 10, 2014, 01:51:11 PM
Wish me luck!  Should be fine.  This years drama was turn signals and clearance lights.  Blew a 1638 turn signal bulb, could not get one anywhere.  Looked everywhere - it's a two terminal bayonet base 15D BA, with the studs at the same height and 28 volts.  I ordered one from an aircraft supply place, they were back ordered, and got a similar bulb but with 15D BAY base (offset studs) and ground off one stud.  Worked fine.  Next was a clearance light was out.  Not only out, but with a half cup of water sitting in it, socket was falling apart, totally toast.  Plus I didn't have any of the light bulbs for it either.  I ordered two tiny little 12v led units http://www.grote.com/product.php?product_number=49322 (http://www.grote.com/product.php?product_number=49322) , wired them in series and mounted them in an aluminium plate that fits inside the stock housing, covered by the stock lens.  I get a completely stock look with easily available 12V lights that should last forever.  Getting the totally rusted mounting screws out only took 2 hours, too...  Now they are stainless steel.  Only about 28 more clearance lights to change...

For my mc7, found all those little bulbs at WW Grainger, when sold the bus, they went with it, about half dozen each new bulb numbers.

Good tip, they show them in their catalog.  None in stock, but having them orderable is an excellent start!

Thanks!

Am not located near a store, so normal orders are usually 1 or 2 days at most.
Just glad to find them there.
We buy a fair amount from them, so enjoy the discount.

Having a bus and my truck conversion on 12vdc is easy. And living in California-one of the strictest states on smog and safety-I haven't had a required safety check ever on my bus, nor my MH registered truck. Nor a smog or smoke check-do figure! Good Luck, TomC

Might also ck with JD @ C & J Bus Repair in MN they used to carry "kits" for the various model MCI's
I don't recall if there was one for a 5 or not but I do remember them for 8's 9's and 102's A-D models.
They were pretty nice came in a plastic case w/compartments for each different light # and on the lid had a diagram of which light was in which compartment w/# and use listed. (about 4-6 bulbs ea iirc)

Bus passed the Provincial inspection with flying colours, all is good in the 'hood...

Thanks for the tips on the bulb suppliers.  My problem as always is buying a $3 item, or even 10 of them, and paying $35 for shipping to Canada, and getting them two weeks after I needed them.  Hence my drive to convert to truck-stop available lighting, and LED's if at all possible.  My local NAPA can get anything that Grote makes, so that is the catalog I am working from.  They make very little in 28 volt LED, though.
