Title: 98 prevost power steering hose
Post by: Busnut83 on September 02, 2014, 07:27:33 PM
Has anyone replaced their hoses...should I attempt the repair myself or is this a major job. How do I detremine which hose is bad.  Returned from trip... went to park bus and hose burst...no steering... puddle from under bus about 3 feet from rear tire???

The hoses are two piece with a bulkhead splice at last bay in front of duals. On curb side up high The rear hose will be aprox15 ft long. It will fasten up from the bottom to bus frame structure.  My suggestion is to leave old one in and strap replacement to it. Those fasteners on a old coach are darn near impossible. Pretty sure both hoses are interchangeable.   Bob

run above. But you are ahead of the splice by about 5 ft. You can access it from the bottom between the rear end and rear bay wall. Above norgren valve bank.  I will send you a pm with my phone # Also will ck to see if I have a picture.  Bob

pic is from above with floor cut out.  left is front of bus  top is curbside.  you can see the air tank on curb side from above.  The larger black hose cut off is one of the power steering hoses.  The splice/bulk head connector is about 30 inches toward front of bus from here.  Bob

Are you sure it is the hose and not a o-ring on the pump fitting they are bad about coming loose, blowing the o-ring and running down the hose then looking like a broke hose

Bob,,, there is a blue braided hose and a black rubber hose that is marked 1200psi... Any idea which hose may be broken????  The hole is over the fuel tank....  I see the connection on the rear engine wall...so hoes is about 35 feet to the front... My plan is to disconnect at rear wall and from the second bay pull the hose thru,,, check for hole ,,,then disconnect from steering ,,, there are hangers about every 3 feet...  So far the hardest part is removing everything from bays and removing the plywood that covers the hose channel.... THANKS already for the info and pic...I think I can do it.... ALSO PREVOST said it would take 3 days plus the price of the hose?????????????????   I LOVE THIS BOARD :-* :-* :-*

the 1200lb hose sounds to low pressure for system..FWIW   I'm   prob wrong.  Will ck mine later when up at shop. Another hose view point above tank.. In condenser compartment. The door swings out.  Look upper left corner there is a plate that is bolted in. remove that plate and you will get a view of top of tank. If you have skinny arms you can feel around for wet hose.   Bob

hoses both marked 12000 psi.  There is probably a open pvc pipe used for running about everything--- front to back in tunnel. They start in the back top of spare tire compartment and run to aprox rear differential . could be cut in last bay if needed.  might be gray 2 inch on driver side. FWIW   Bob

Be careful not to puncture your finger if there is steel braid exposed from a blown hose.

3600 bucks to replace a hose I thought the 1500 they charged in Ft Worth was out of this world with the hose WOW

Why couldn't you pull the hose and put a splice in after cutting out the bad section... really where did $3600.00 come up for a replacement cost ?

Unless u could get the correct " field repair" ends you would have to take in both pieces to have new ends put on for any type of a repair, "splices" don't work on high pressure hydraulic hoses for the most part.

He said Prevost labor was 3 days Donald 24 hours to replace the hose they did charge me 1500 smackers to replace the hose but that was their estimate and I held them to it it was  less than 1/2 of what the final bill was maybe they learn in a hurry ::)

Yeah they do...if you use fittings and unions rated the same as the hose.

At least the $3600.00 included the hose and a kiss...I hope... :-*

It took awhile I guess people complained about 100 ft of hose on the power steering I noticed on a 2010 they have metal tubing with short hoses on each end now, the way it should have been years ago

Eagle that is what I said, a "splice" is a whole different animal.

A barbed fitting with hose clamps is my thinking of a splice you see a lot of those on old buses  ;D sometime the owners get creative and use 4 clamps

I think about 2 hr to install hose with all the clamps????  Maybe I didnt take the breaks Prevost mech take?????

The hoses are a weak link on Prevost it is fact hoses that long under 2000 + psi just don't last and they are not all routed in the same place mine went right down the middle on the H and was a bitch to remove with 20 clamps

LOL  they spend 4 hrs washing and draining the fluid can't have any oil the nice floors and I kinda understand that with all the conversion in the shop that would piss me off to see a oily foot print on white carpet

Be careful what kind of hose they sell you, a lot of crap from china and India now. Good prices, not so good hose. You probably need three wire, don't save a few bucks and regret it down the road.

Parker is the best hose on the market IMO,Eaton second and Bridgestone is the best for the offshore guys,Eaton was the OEM for Prevost
Title: 1974 Crown Supercoach 10 Wheeler
Post by: HB of CJ on September 13, 2014, 02:29:41 PM
I had a local mechanic change out both of mine.  Only one had visible leaks at both ends, but both looked the same age so both were done at once.  This was about 11 years ago.  About $6 bucks per foot, plus putting the ends on.  The Crown had a burned up Victors pump and TRW power assist steering.  Still safe to drive, just no power assist.  The very knowledgeable guy in Grants Pass OR also provided the correct larger Victors pump.

16K front axle. A local heavy truck mechanic changed out both hoses, the pump and put on correct Gates belts.  Right at $1000 bucks total then?  $Ouch$ and Yikes!  Once fixed correctly, one could turn the wheel lock to lock with just one finger.  The entire front end of the Crown lifted up a bit, then dropped back down.  Absolutely quiet.  No whine.  The Cummins never dropped rpm.  Long ago and far away.  HB of CJ (old coot)

If he had went to a Prevost service center he would have gotten 2 hoses replaced ::) plus a oil sample, pressure check, a flush new oil , filter, steering box adjustment and another sample it better come back good or they do the flush and new oil again BTDT.

To most of us we think it's a over kill , not to Prevost they don't leave much to chance at a price of course

You do need the change the filter it is not fun when the rubber gets in the poppet, rotary valves and the recirculating balls in the sector from a  bad hose BTDT

You should be a happy camper now  ;D.

I buy a tremendous amount of hose and fittings each year and have found that there are no short cuts on quality of the hose and the correct fittings. You might consider getting what they call some field repair fittings for the type and brand of hose you bought, if you have a bad hose in the future you can cut and repair it on the road if necessary. Not really expensive and they work well, worth it if you even suspect you may have another problem. Don't even attempt a barbed splice of any sort, those are for low pressure return lines or water hoses.

i wonder what the pressure is set at...heck i wonder if it's adjustable...i know very little about a Prevost.

i do know a lot about digging bits of old hose out of the hydraulic system of a John Deere tho... :-\

Those are heavy suckers on the front axle to begin with, then adding the conversions they get even heavier I think they are up to a 20,000 lb front axle now it pushes the limit on the 315 tires for sure 8)
