The good news is, the smoke alarm works, more good news, the only thing lost was a oven mitt.
While eating dinner and watching TV, the smoke alarm went off. Thinking it was just smoke from cooking, I looked over my shoulder to see the top of the oven on fire..... A small fire, but a fire never the less. Picked up the oven mitt, and tossed in in the sink. End of fire. :-\
Folks, Please check you smoke detectors, NOW.

Dave: Sounds like your wife cooks for you like you were a god, she gives you burnt offerings. You also have to remember that if you critize the cook, then you better know how to cook.
I change the batteries in my smoke detectors each December.

Most Fire Departments recommend changing smoke detector batteries when you change your clocks for daylight savings time. This replaces your batteries twice a year. This may be overkill, but you may not get a second chance. If a fire starts while you are sleeping, you will probably never wake up. Jack

Dr. Dave, I am still laughing my you know what off over that one. My wife cooked on a gas top range for 12 of our 13 years of marriage (13 years as of last Monday) and now, she has an electric stove. Needless to say, it's like going from an automatic to a manual transmission and almost every time she cooks a meal, she sets off the smoke detector. I am now like one of Pavlov's dogs. My only fear is that if we have a real fire, I'll get burned up trying to get to the table...

And to make things even more fun...
Cast Iron skillets.. They need to be "seasoned" after a good washing...
So in goes the oil... Then add intense heat until the smoke detector squawks.. That indicates that you have reached
the correct temperature.
The toaster is not set dark enough until the loud beeping starts.
Is the WOK hot enough?.. beep - beep - beep... and so on.....
I keep extra 9 volt batteries.. Seems that my smoke detectors run them down about every 3 months for some odd reason.... :-\ :-\
How do you tell when the steaks on the grill are "well done"? -- smoke detector... ( and the grill is outside on the back porch! )
And yes, The dinner bell around here sure sounds like a very loud beeping noise........
