Title: rearend oil change
Post by: David Anderson on July 27, 2014, 11:42:13 AM
Drained the oil in my rearend on the the Eagle 10.  I took a couple of pictures of the magnetic plug.  It seemed like a lot of metal, but after scraping in off the magnet it seems about the same as it was the last time I changed the oil.  There were no big chunks.  1st pic is dirty, 2nd is cleaned.

The oil still had some golden look to it and smelled like gear oil.  It has been about 35k miles since the last change.  The book calls for 19 qts of 85-140w oil.  Bought some at NAPA and will pour it in Friday after I get back from an out of town commitment, so it will drain all week.

I did drive the coach before draining.  The oil was warm and flowed well when I pulled the plug.

If you're using regular petroleum based or mineral oil, rear end oil change is generally around 100,000mi. If you're using synthetic, around 350,000mi. I have driven my bus 35,000mi, and haven't yet changed the rear end oil. Course-if you don't mind the smell (I hate that oil smell), it won't hurt. Good Luck, TomC

He doing it right Eagles with the drop box are every 30,000 miles follow it they don't have problems, fwiw the MCI 5 with a drop box is every 25,000 miles. The square cut gears in the drop boxes create a lot of metal particles

I guess some might think im over doing it  .
In our small charter business we change Oil and filters including the diff after every charter over 2k and complete service top to bottom , even with our mc9 conversion oil is cheap only way you can really know whats going on  specially with vintage equipment .. take oil samples its money well spent .
Just my opinion

Title: The Smell Of Gear Oil, Cleaning Solvent And Diesel Fuel
Post by: HB of CJ on July 28, 2014, 03:37:10 PM
The smell of gear oil, cleaning solvent and diesel fuel.  Don't forget the country music also.  Smells like victory or a very happy private garage/shop goofing around putting 353 and 453 Detroit Diesels into old 1963-64 Ford one ton trucks and pickups.  Corporation gear housings, New Process 540, Spicer 5831C transmissions and once a Jake Brake.  Long ago and far away.  About 1972-74.  HB of CJ (old coot) :)

I put the oil in yesterday.  It would only take 17 qts.  I buttoned it up and drove it 20 miles.  I will check it later to see if it will take two more as shown in the manual.
