Title: Shower Buses
Post by: Dave5Cs on June 28, 2014, 10:19:40 PM
City of SF has outfitted some Buses with tanks and showers , just caught the end of the story on the news tonight. There is a group of Bus owners that is driving and around town and parking them near homeless groups and shelters to charge a small fee so they can get a shower to maybe be more likely to get a job as they put it. They looked like light Blue Transits maybe 80's era.

Sweet! You know, on the subject of cool ideas for buses...I've wondered what the market for a nice converted coach is in the oil boom town in North Dakota. Since our coaches are worth nothing, would a single guy working for the oil company pay a decent amount of money for a converted coach that he could
live in out there? They have a crazy housing shortage. Charging for showers in inner city slums is an awesome way to think out of the box. Love t

After reading on line about it, the city is paying for it and people are also making donations to the company that builds them. There is no charge to the users of the shower service.
We donate a lot of things my Wife makes to the Shelters, Churches and Homeless Veterans, & for the needy and no offense to anyone but we think the showers are a good thing. Trust me on this one.

We have a bunch of nearly 20- year-old RTSs here in NYC that would make great shower buses, especially when it's rainingt.

Well they won't need the dollar Clifford because the showers are free to them. They get 20 minutes for each use. The Lava Ma project which is supported by private donations pays for the maintenance on the Buses as well as the fuel if needed to move them. The city gives them a break on water and sewer hookups. Interesting concept.

We have the same thing going on here about the ones that actually work for the Russians and go out to the same street intersection begging for money. The other day there was one that had a sign that said," homeless VN Vet can't find work please help". My wife said open your window, told him who came over with his hand out where he could go for help and handed him all the info she carries for shelters and job centers as well as free medical for Vets a list of the Stand-downs that she volunteers for. He threw it on the ground and yelled he want money not her pity. We said good luck and drove on!............

Those buses must have HUGE tanks, both fresh and gray.  Even with low-flow everything or navy showers, that's going to run through a lot of water.  Where are they filling and dumping?  I assume that requires moving the bus every time, and I would guess they would need to fill-and-dump at least once or likely multiple times per day, depending on traffic in a city as large as San Francisco.  (I lived in Atherton/Menlo Park for a while, and in fairness, a lot of what look like young bums out there are just kids whose parents didn't do a very good job...)

Cheers, John

...  Where are they filling and dumping?  ...

One of the earlier posts said they were hooked-up to water and sewer.

And here's another way of doing it...

John in one of the videos they have on line it was on one of the other boards they show them actually hooking up to the fire hydrants for water and they go to a lot of homeless shelters and stay there for awhile so many days a week. That is where they dump if needed. They put in 50 gallon water heater fired by Propane.
