Title: Saw a bus towing a bus today
Post by: Charles in SC on June 26, 2014, 06:52:14 PM
I was traveling today and saw two school busses, each was towing another school bus down the interstate at 70 mph.
I did not think they would have had the power to do this. I wish I had been able to get a picture. I just thought I would post this for all those that want to tow something big.

It's how school districts now are reducing their staffing costs (only one driver needed for two busloads of sprogs) and fuel.   Next year we'll be seeing roadtrains of school buses.

Were there kids in the towed bus. I can't imagine that would be legal. There would still have to be an adult in the tow to keep an eye on the brats. Perhaps the bus was broke down or it was a new delivery. How big were the buses?

They weren't being towed.........they were mating. That's how school buses are made.

"Gillig Breath." I like it! May I use it for my superhero alter ego handle?

School bus gender can be determined in one of 2 ways. The male tends to have more black than yellow. The female tends more often than not to have aluminum wheels as opposed to steel.

This was in Alabama on I-20. I guess only the government can get away with towing a 40 foot trailer behind a 40 foot bus. Or maybe the ones in the back was pushing? As I remember it 3 of them were yellow and one was white. What gender are the white ones? This might be a good way to practice driving one of those 80 foot articulated buses you used to see for sale now and then.

Well, if they can do that, then next time our MCI breaks down, I'm calling one of you guys to tow me. Some of you are pretty open about how much power your bus has :) time to flex :)

I often see groups of buses being delivered with one bus towing a van that the drivers get home in.  For some reason, the van often seems to be a Chevy Astro.  Maybe they are easy to set up for towing?

Our high rise sleeper trucks are delivered three at a time. But-they use a special I-beam that bolts to the frame by the drive axles, then extends all the forward to lift up the front axle just off the ground. The I-beam then raises up and has a fifth wheel to attach to the next truck in front. Pretty trick-it took many tries for them to get it right. After delivering many trucks, the delivery company has a semi come in and pick up the I-beams to transport back to the factory for the next bunch of trucks. They do this because the high rise sleepers are too tall to piggy back anymore. Good Luck, TomC
