Title: Explain this?
Post by: Ed Hackenbruch on June 17, 2014, 07:41:45 AM
Took off yesterday morning and after about a half hour or so i started seeing blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. I figured it was burning oil and i kept an eye on it and after awhile i stopped and shut it off and checked the oil level to see how much it was down. Added some and took off again. Was probably stopped for about 30 minutes. Exhaust was clean even when i went over a pass. I had thought maybe i had one or more broken oil rings at first and was looking at a rebuild, now i am wondering if they were just stuck or something else and from just sitting for that 30 minutes they freed up?  What say the experts??? ;D

I would be more inclined to say the blower seals are going bad, check that first with a flashlight

That will do it if set and idled for a while, or several short idles, and then burns off with a 10 to 20 mile run. Also, a small coolant leak into the cylinder but not so much as to cause white smoke; fuel leaking into oil possibly. Maybe a full moon also, but I'm not sure about the moon.

Ed that came from parking close to HUGGY for a few days.  She smokes all the time
but uses no oil.

Just have to get use to it. and to the fuel bill every time you fill up.

How is the trip going.

Ned, trip is fine. Used to the fuel bill, not that i like it!  Thought that i was parked far enough away from Huggy. ;D   Chessie, it hadn't set and idled, we had just done a 200 mile run a couple of days before and this happened after we had already gone 40-50 miles into another 200 mile run.....full moon was a couple of days before. :D

ED  How do you figure your fuel milage.  you are not going and coming back.

I get about 3 to 4 going  and the same going back.  that makes 6 to 8 mpg.

Ned, i don't use bus math usually, most of the time i use real math!  I average 7.24 mpg but have gotten as high as 8.46 just a couple of tanks ago......wish i could get that all of the time! ;D
