Title: Front Windshield Defrost
Post by: 82 MCI-9 on December 13, 2006, 08:57:29 PM
I would like to remove the coil under the front dash that is for the window defrost so that i can remove the pump and lines that go to it. Just trying to eleminate one more thing that could go wrong. So i was wondering if there is a company that makes one that is electrical like a coil with a fan that i could reconect to the duct. If not would like to have some opinions on how i could make my own. A hair dryer is out of the question. Thanks Robert

(I fixed the spelling on the title so that this would be searchable in the archives -Dallas)

I'm not sure about the reliability of your system, but hot water coil heaters & defrosters have been reliable for decades... so much so that they are still used.  Perhaps, if the lines are in bad condition, they could be replaced.  Same goes for the pump.  It'll take a lot of electricity to equal the amount of heat that a standard defroster puts out.  You can also look on eBay for a generic replacement that might function better or be in better condition.

Robert, unless that defroster unit is leaking I would not remove it! Neither would I remove the lines or pump. With today's prices of copper that could be a major expense to replace.  Going to total electric would be a mistake, but that's my opinion. I replaced my whole system from the lines, pump and defroster/ac unit, the unit came from Ron the Bus Nut. one more thing unless your floor in the bus is removed that would be a monumental task either removing or replacing........the more I write about this the more i'm convinced it would be wrong to remove your system!  Anyway good luck on what ever you decided!

Thanks for fixing the spelling Dallas. The more I read about your opinions the more i think i will just leave it in. Theres nothing wrong with it I was just trying to eleminate the copper lines runinig through the bus. I have plenty of room under the bus it is a low floor transit bus so i dont have the problems that you would have with a bus that has bays under it plus i did a 18" roof raise which gave me an 8ft ceiling. I plan on raising the floor about 9" so i can run all of the utilities under it with access panels for the important stuff. Thanks !! everyone for there opinions if there is anymore please chime in. With a transit you have to start thinking outside of the box.

I believe you will find the existing defroster assembly one of the best things that you leave in. It was specifically designed to keep the windshields of that vehicle clear in very inclimate weather and I suspect it would be impossible to design something that would do a better job.

Definitely you could not design an electrical operated unit to perform even close to what the existing unit does.
Your idea sounds something like Two Dogs idea to replace the existing mechanical driven radiator fan with an electric one. LOL
