Title: Finished air bag project
Post by: bevans6 on May 30, 2014, 11:25:46 AM
Finally finished changing three of the four air springs on the rear of the MC-5C.  Three bags were well-checked and looked pretty crusty, could well have been original since they were Firestones.  The fourth was a fairly new Goodyear.  All the bolts undid and with my little tool I got them all off without breaking one.  Started on Tuesday morning, finished on Friday afternoon, probably an honest 20 hour job.  I always forget how long it takes to get the wheels on and off, find the blocking, all the cleaning and painting of the rings and the beam plates, cleaning and painting the outer wheels, letting the rings soak in de-rusting bath for an hour, it all adds up.  This was the last major refurbishment job left over from when I bought the bus.  It's now got new springs all round, new brakes, new(ish) steering, new turbocharged engine, refurb clutch, air compressor, DD3 chambers, inversion valve, and all new brake system hoses at the rear.  It's almost a new bus!  Now I get to start on the small stuff - I am also just finishing up completely replumbing the water system with PEX.  When I put water in this spring and got pressure up a half dozen of the glued plastic joints on the white plastic plumbing started to leak.

Sounds great. I would like to see your (new) bus. We are separated by 3 or 4 thousand miles, but maybe one day... I hope you remove that exhaust stack off the back before then, ha, ha, that's the only thing I don't like about your bus. I have to admire the cleaning and painting of parts like air bag rings, that is being fussy. But that's how guys like you turn out show room condition vehicles. I remember doing air bags on the Courier 96, and installing new rings because the old ones were too rough. You just need to drive it now...

Actually I took the stack off when I changed the muffler a few weeks ago, getting a nice chrome turn-down tip for the muffler next week.  I leave for a nice road-trip on June 10, 3600 Km towing a race car trailer.

Brian,
Just bought 4 bags & leveling valve from Luke. Still have 5 months on my "part-time job trip out of town" , but I'll be ready to fix the front end when I get back.
I used Pex on all my plumbing-red & blue home runs from a Viega manifold(I saw it in a high end MH & knew I needed it)

We're going to Mosport (now called Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, but I am old-school) to a vintage car race to debut the Lola T492 that I have restored for a friend of mine.  Mosport is just east of Toronto.
