I start mine in first and shift it like it was a standard...
when I get to the top gear....I slip it back one gear so that it is ready to down shift....when a hill shows up.
and if the hill is long i'll pre down shift again...
seems to work for me.

If you're throttle modulator is adjusted correctly, you should be able to put it in 1-4 and go. The only time I down shift is to hold on a hill. Remember though, if you over speed the trans (like around 2,400rpm) the transmission will up shift even though you have it held in that gear. Good Luck, TomC

thats where i was having trouble , cruising along 60-70 , trans selector set at 1-4 just fine then come upon a long grade & speed drops off & it seems it waits too long to downshift , i'll try running it up to speed in 1-4 then drop back to 1-3 , thanks for the replies .

Gene - pay attention to your speeds.  If you figure out what your governed speeds are for each gear (leave it in 1st and go as fast as you can on a flat road and write that speed down..repeat for each gear) then on your climbs you can manually downshift after it drops past that speed.  So when Im on a climb ill shift into 3rd (my 3rd gear governs out at 56mph) when I get down to about 54mph.   Same for second...Ill downshift around 38-36mph.  Itll auto downshift much later but better to keep the rpms up.

I always drove mine with the tach about the same as using the speedometer it would drop to the rpm I was accustom to with the shift points flip the Stone/Bennett shifter to 3rd man does the Bennett shifter make a nice smooth down shift on the 740. I loved that little switch on the dash

As RJ pointed out it does take practice to down shift a 740 with a shift tower mostly because going from 4th to 3rd or lower the transmission is in the lockup mode which makes it like manual in reality. To bad a Bennett cost so much they made the transition  so smooth

Yep place the throttle in full throttle position, place the cable at full throttle against the stop the cable should not have more than 1-1/2in or less than 1-1/8in travel when finished all there is to it JC
