Well this is exciting! Look at all the extra parts I'm ending up with. The Allison MT644 was dyno'd and should be arriving late in the week. Fred
Fred, how are you going to shift it? The PO used the old gearshift lever in the same location for mine.
Are you getting the shifter from Global also? Remember the shifter for a 740 and a 640 have different throws. I got mine NOS from Direct Machinery Outlet (Tom), which is a bus parts place I think in MA. Also ask Bobby if the shift lever on the transmission is from the 740 series or the 640 series; they are also different. With the wrong one, you may not be able to manually shift into first.
Yah the "kit" from Global includes the tower to mount the shifter to the floor right where the old one was. The tranny is supposed to have the correct shift lever on it according to my one dozen conversations with Bobby.
FWIW I stripped all the gears out of the Spicer and got around $100 for the aluminium case. Pained me to do it, but it was a well worn out gearbox. It would be so nice to save the stuff, but at some point you have to think about the executor of your estate dealing with an 800 lb antique transmission...
Brian
But Brian, at that point it would be their problem, not yours! ;D
