Title: Tires rehashed again..
Post by: Zeroclearance on May 05, 2014, 04:46:49 PM
I have 24.5 rims on my H from the factory.

For my steers I run Michelins 16 ply XZE..

I want to replace my drive tires.  I don't want to spend the Michelin "tax"

I have narrowed it down to BF Goodrich or Hankook..   I'm leaning towards the BF Goodrich, one could say they are now US made Michelin's..

I don't want  Goodyears..

Other recommendations?   Bridgestones,  Firestones or Cooper?

I put Hankooks on the front of my bus last spring and like them so far and am going to get some for the back in the next month or two.   11R 22.5

Michelin does own the Goodrich plant in Ardmore OK the Toyos were the best tire I ever bought for a smooth ride they didn't crack either my last set of Toyo's were made in GA 1 set was made in Japan

I had Toyo's on my Tundra and could not break them loose in the snow and ice and yep rode really smooth. Lasted a long time also.

Here is a story,  I cut a outside drive (ran over debris).   The tire shop only could get me a Westlake tire..   For a made in China tire, it's doing pretty good..

I'll price out the Toyo..

The BF Goodrich steer tire is exactly a Michelin XZA1. I have them on the front of my truck. My tire guy likes both BF Goodrich and Hankook tires. Can't go wrong with either. Good Luck, TomC

Better make sure guts of tire including rubber mix is the same. Tire quality is all over the map with second line tires. A tire that is good on a Tundra doesn't equate to a commercial coach tire. Also consider quality recaps for drive and tag tires. If you are only going to drive 5,000 miles or little more distance per year should factor that into purchase. Also as tires age, some develop sidewall cracking faster than others from exposure, especially in the sun.

Had 10 year old Michelins 16 ply XZE's with about 500 miles on them when I bought bus. Looked at Michelins. Sticker shock! Went with Hannooks with 6 on back and Bridgestones on front. A little over 12,000 miles on them now and they handle and look good.

What have you folks seen for pricing around the US.   It's looking like $400 for a 11R24.5

I'm looking for pricing for the Toyo, BF Goodrich and Hankook.

Just got a set of Firestone FS560 for my front steers. I am waiting on the bill to come in to see what the damage is going to be.... I have a connection in the truck tire business so i am hoping they will come in at a pretty fair price. He says it's the tire gnomes that get him good deals... What is nice is he also sand blasted and painted the wheels for me as well.

They look great now.

Btw he said this is one of the most used fleet tires. It is also a 16 ply tire which is great, and has reinforced sidewalls to help potentially save the tire if it where to be curbed.

That tire is what is called a regional tire. Made for scrubbing, rubbing curbs, and still run on the freeway. Around 70,000 miles, the shoulders of the tires will start to cup out-but I doubt you'll get to that kind of mileage before the tire wears out with time. Good selection for the steers. Weigh the front and run the proper inflation-you'll get the best ride. Good Luck, TomC

Check the tire speed limit. Some tires designed for local driving do have the thicker sidewall to prevent failure from hitting a curb, but because of that thicker sidewall they cannot reject the heat from higher speeds thus may have speed limits of as low as 55.

About the only tires not at 75mph are the construction super singles and transit bus tires. Firestone FS560 are 75mph tires. Good Luck, TomC

It won't mater what you pay for the tires, you will still pay into the Obamacare system. It seems the Dumbocrats think a tire is A MEDICAL DEVICE!!, so you get to pay two excise taxes on each tire on top of the state taxes..>>>Dan >:(
