Title: Should I be scared? MC9
Post by: wdtjawshwdt on May 05, 2014, 03:53:35 PM
All right so are the vertical supports in between the windows supposed to be bowed?  I put in two pieces of steel to frame out my new windows and noticed that I am about an inch off from the existing vertical supports.   Things could be getting interesting in this project.

I assume you went from floor to roof?  Yes, there is a bend in the side wall frame just below the windows.

See photos on my website. When I reframed my sidewalls, I put the bend back into the new supports, although I could easily have done without it
since I replaced all framing along both sides.

Going to go check it out. I was hoping to get away with just replacing  sections.   :-o  Time to go get schooled by you at your website.

Could I do a kerf cut (correct terminology?) and bring the original vertical frame members back in?  I could chain up the opposite sides and use a comealong to get the desired effect?   This is just brain storming right now.

I don't understand why you're having problems if you're framing in the windows. The original bend is at the bottom of the
windows. So, unless your new windows go below that, it should be straight from the window sill level to the roof level.

One of my bunk windows went across the bend. I just framed the bend lower. It's hard to tell anything is different unless you look really close.

I would suggest just moving the bend down to the bottom of the window in the two verticals on either side. When you put the siding on and rivet it in place, it will conform
and you'll never see it.

Actually, I think what I would do there is cut out those 3 verticals below the window, and put in a horizontal from the two original verticals that runs
across the bottom of the window. That way, your lower section will be straight along the original verticals, and there will only be a slight discrepancy
where the siding comes in to meet the window framing. Won't be noticable.

The only verticals that are in place are the two outside around the window.  Glad I didn't weld everything in place and just tacked it.   With the original vertical supports I thought maybe with them being completely rusted through they had compromised the structure in sections and created the bend.   Now I have to kind of go back to the drawing board.  Thank you for documenting your project Gumpy it is helping me.   :-D   I read about the windshield issue too that you had.   It is rusted around there too :(   I keep on trying to convince myself that this purchase was a good idea.       Just a lot of work    :D

It always seems like a good idea. I look back on my build and was glade I didn't have to go through as much work as Gumpy and others. You pay either way. At least with a bus you have to work on you know what you got. We could have bought a seemingly better bus for more money and still could have had issues. A bus is a money pit no matter how you look at it. Either you pay now or later. Nothing is for free except our time LOL.

I was keeping track of my time.   I stopped...One of those things I'd rather not know if I decide to sell it.   HAH
