Title: In search of a waterpump for an 8V92T
Post by: bsharpe on February 13, 2014, 06:29:09 AM
Hey all!

We developed a coolant drip crossing the Everglades earlier this week.  At first I thought it was just a loose hose connection just below the water pump.  We got caught in that first winter storm while in Chattanooga and found ourselves in some sub 10 degree weather, saw some drips when the pipes were that cold -- they stopped when they got warm.  ANYway...

It's gotten worse and appears to be coming from a small hole on the engine side of the connection that goes down from the pump.  I then realized it wasn't the hose, but the pump itself.

I looked up a DD dealer near us (Lou Bachrodt Freightliner in Pampano) and gave them a call.  They can't seem to be able to find the part.   Any ideas?

My second question is:  Our low water light is on now.  Can I put water in it to go the 10 miles to the shop?  I had read on here about water pumps going bad and putting water into the oil.  Would really like to avoid that if possible.

   Thank you for your help!

   FWIW: Engine SN is: 8VF119578 * 8087-7840 (1987 era w/ 52k orig miles)

That water pump won't dump water in the engine just buy a seal kit the pump does not need to be removed to replace the seal the weep hole were the water is coming from prevents water from getting into the engine pour water in and drive

I've got a spare if you need it.  For the right price, it comes with a Prevost bus.   :o

Cheers, John

8v-92's have different water pumps. Make sure yours matches the replacement. Walking or standing!

I'd take Clifford's advice and just replace the seal w/pump still on the engine.

Also as Ace said there are more than one style pump used on those.

There are three kinds a "Standing" (both pipes point straight down) "Walking" (one pipe down one bent) or "Running" both pipes bent directions)

If you find that the pump can't be "rebuilt" and you need to find one call -  Midwest Diesel Service, Inc. located in Cape Girardeau, MO.  573 - 334 - 7707         http://midwestdieselservice.com/ (http://midwestdieselservice.com/)

If they don't have one in stock it'll surprise the heck out of me! Vince once told dad an I "If we don't have it, it's because my wife doesn't know it exists!"

Clark Power Services
8015 Piedmont Triad Parkway
Greensboro, NC

(800) 849-3437
Jeff

Had transmission serviced there last September. Asked about parts availability on an 8V92. Said they could get any part made by or for Detroit Diesels. Might be worth a call.
