Title: Got a mouse...
Post by: Scott & Heather on September 25, 2013, 04:53:10 AM
Thought I had sealed our bus against the critters but forgot about one last hole. It is now sealed and this sucker is owl food:

LOL. I saw the title, and thought, Scott will totally have a pic in there.

Sure enough. Not just one angle, but two angles of it. ;D Glad you got it.

We were sitting at Cabela's in Mitchell, SD one night a few years ago watching a video when a little mouse comes slinking out from the behind the end table I had the TV sitting on.
I set some traps and before morning I had killed 5. Got two in one trap on a single snap. They were little mice and it took both of them to set the trap off.
When I got home, I got 2 or 3 more. Must have been an entire family I had picked up in Wyoming or Colorado. They came in through the electrical panel next to the driver.

I had a couple this summer, too, but the traps I leave set in the bus took care of them. I leave one in the electrical panel, and one inside.

I left a bag of sugar in my bus by accident one year.  Mice got in and made a huge mess.  If you store your bus for long periods be sure to remove any food.  I have not had mice problems when the bus has no food in it during storage.

Thanks for using traps ("snap traps") and the sticky traps.  There's a big problem with predator animals being poisoned by mouse/rat poison.  The rodents eat the stuff and go out and get eaten by bigger animals.  Something like 90% of the predator cats (wildcats, pumas, etc.) in CA were found to have "clinical" level of Warfarin (the blood thinning drug in rat poison) in their bodies.  It's also becoming a big problem with predator birds which are even more sensitive to the chemicals; for some reason, owls are particularly badly affected.
Sometimes you gotta do "things you don't really like" but lots of times there are good alternatives to the poison.

Not to mention it's taste/smell is really attractive to the family dog.  You've got to be really careful to keep D-Con out of Fido's reach and make sure he doesn't eat any of the dead rodents.

Don t leave printers ink in the bus. It was a mess. Luckely Fantasic takes it off most things just so ya know. He ate through the plastic container then the ink container. Then after he was fully covered with black ink ran around the bus and even up a wall stayed off new couch and seats. But food was in the bus. Stripped down batteries to only metal left. A whole big pack of them.

We tried one of those futuristic plug in rodent repeller units in our bus.... caught 3 mice with my old fashioned snap-trap and some Borden cheese after having the units running for over 2 months.... go figure. Now we have a few moth balls scattered around in nooks and crannies and no more mice... not even a single new sign of them. Being parked in the middle of an old hay field... it gets hard to keep them out.  ;D

Lol. Nice. ;) I never use poison....nearly killed a family dog when someone poisoned a chipmunk and the dog ate it. Glue traps are not exactly humane, but they do have sedative in the glue. Awesomely effective. When placed along walls, they'll catch tons of spiders and other bugs. Amazing.

I do not understand why people use glue traps. There are much better traps out there that either allow you to catch the animal unharmed, or kill the animal relatively quickly. A glue trap just makes it panic so much that they rip parts of themselves off, or force them to gnaw on a limb to escape. Sorry, but that is unnecessarily cruel. It's an inhumane device and arguably torture for the poor animal. They've used these things at work, and I can tell you, it is NOT pretty. I am vehemently against them because of the suffering they inflict. If people need to kill an animal, they should ensure it is quick and painless. Anything less is pointless cruelty.

This 'sedative' isn't actually such, as the animal looks awake to me. Don't be fooled by it, it'll be alive and suffering on that thing for a very long time if you do not dispatch it. The ones they used at work apparently had a 'sedative' but when we came in the next morning, we were witness to a few mice that pulled parts of their bodies off because they struggled so much and were in an incredible amount of pain. And I sincerely hope you aren't one of those people who just leave them on it alive, into the thrash, to starve to death. Not a death any animal deserves, pest or not. If I had my way I would ban glue traps completely because forcing an animal to chew its own legs off and starve to death is deplorable, no matter what animal it is. Don't really care how effective it is, supergluing a small mammal on plastic where its skin practically meshes with it is wrong.

Come to my place of work chessie, and see the carnage with your own eyes. Will you be rolling your eyes then? What issue do you take with my above paragraphs? Too animal rights activist/extremist? I wouldn't have thought so considering I conceded problem animals do need to be dealt with.

You might say I'm making too big a deal about it, but I'm not. I take animal cruelty pretty seriously, and I will reiterate that if you need to kill something, get it done and over with and do so quickly.

Mice are certainly a pita  and a dilemma to P.E.T.A.

I am with you VOM.  I used the glue trap once and it was awful.  One of the problems with the poison is they will die hid someplace and stink.  My first choice is the humane trap,  if that doesn't work then the snap strap.  Most of the damage to water lines and air lines is when they are looking for water.  If I suspect I have a mouse I put out a dish of water near the trap. Any food that isn't canned I keep sealed in plastic containers even if it is sealed in a package.

They definitely are a PITA, and I know someone whose name is Peta and she hates mice. But I do not think it is in any way excessive or extremist to say that death should be via swift and painless means when possible. Excessive cruelty to any animal is wrong.

I had a family in mine when I left for AZ last year so the cat spent the winter catching and eating them. I was suprised that she even caught one outside trying to escape.  I did have to catch a couple with traps  too. Jerry

And I saw another one a night or two ago. Snuggling in my clothes no less! Grrr. That time of year. Spent nearly half the day yesterday sealing up every book and cranny with foam etc. Hoping this takes care of it. I hate mice in my house. Wife hates them even more. As for the comments on animal cruelty, I noticed that you've posted 5 times here. 4 of those were in my thread. Apparently you've never seen a mouse survive a snap trap. It's ugly. I'll do it my way. Some of you guys mentioned moth balls. I stuck a bag of them in the spare tire compartment and still had mice. Do they lose their effectiveness over time?

I use snap traps, and yes they do survive those.

Scott,

Wifey and I split a lobster roll tonight.  If there ever was a cruel way to kill something it would be boiling it to death.  Hot scalding water and they flap for about 20-30 seconds screaming the whole time but dang are they tasty.  Too bad mice ain't tasty ;)

I honestly am not looking forward to creatures co-habitating the bus with us.  We already had a run-in with Vinny. I'm hoping if we keep the wheels rolling we lessen the chances of hitch-hikers.

How many posts I have doesn't make my points on cruelty any less so. I haven't because their necks are broken clean, that's what they're designed to do. And a glue trap isn't ugly? How did you dispose of the mouse? That's where the concern of cruelty really comes from, the way someone deals with a live animal that's already trapped. It suffers a lot on those things, so that's why I hope you euthanise it.

Lobsters don't "scream", they can't because they don't have vocal cords. And the proper way now is to put them into the freezer first before boiling them, or a thrust to the brain with a really sharp knife.

So we've had traps out for actually three nights now and nothing. I've literally placed them everywhere. So I think we're alone again. I've gone over every inch of the coach and sealed up every hole I could find. I'm hoping we're golden. Sean, Vinny? Haha. Nice. Like I told your wifey in a recent text message while you were in Hong Kong, we never had roach issues in our coach while in FL. Now Texas may be a different story. Florida brought ant problems. Tons of teeny weeny (hardly visible with the naked eye) sweet ants. Bombed the coach and got rid them. Worked for us. My extensive research on electronic repellents say that they don't work long term as the rodents in lab tests eventually grew accustomed to the frequencies and just stuck around instead of being repelled.

I don't owe you any information on how I deal with the rodents.  As I said earlier, this is a bus forum. We discuss buses and their issues. Your fondness for animals is commendable, but out of the 5 or 7 total posts you've posted on this forum, all but one were in my thread being a maverick for humane mice treatment. I think more bus talk in this thread would be more appropriate. The "off topic" thread would be appropriate for you to raise animal cruelty issues. At that point, you could make your case. And then I would feel free to give you some not-so-pleasant details on what I think about how much money worldwide goes into protecting animals, and animal psychology, and rescue programs and animal spas.....and yet I've traveled all over the world from Cuba to Russia, to the Republic of Georgia, to Honduras and back and my mind will never ever be able to erase the memories of the thousands of refugee and orphan and disabled kids I worked with who were going hungry, were abused, had no medical care for even basic issues like ear infections and pinkeye, and yet who wore a smile on their face not even the Devil himself could take away. I value human life far far above animals. I never intentionally cause animals pain and love them just as much as the next guy (people who actually know me and met me will tell you that) but don't expect this boy to be a maverick for animal rights as long as I see human beings suffering at the cruelty of other human beings. But you? Go for it. In the "off topic" forum. Or around the campfire at a bus rally.

Don't turn it into an issue about humans being more important, because it's not about that. The thread is a mouse thread, and as such the issue of disposal is completely relevant. Turning it into an "animals vs humans" thing is just dodging the point, it's not like one can't care about both so it's really moot. I actually agree that humans are more important, but that's besides the point.

QuoteI never intentionally cause animals pain and love them just as much as the next guy
Yet you use a glue trap...

A trap that is arguably the most barbaric animal trap in the world...

A trap that is banned in many countries, and is so controversial...

Need I go on? This will be my last post in this thread, since you're so keen on dodging the issue on disposal of such animals in a thread where it's actually relevant. Fine. I'll create an off-topic thread.

And luvrbus, don't expect mice to have a similar thought process to humans. They don't know any better, they are only trying to survive after all. It's not like they methodically plan to chew into your stuff. It's not a reason to ignore cruelty though, and it's certainly not a reason to inflict pointless cruelty (because unlike wild animals, humans know a lot better).
