Title: Breaker one nine...
Post by: Purplewillie on August 09, 2013, 05:27:21 PM
So I'm in the process of cleaning up the overhead console, removing the old crt type monitor . I pulled this out as well,
CB and some type of amp.
Does anybody still have these?
Does anybody still use these?
I just don't see the use in putting it back in.

Good call Gunner ... Mine is a Palomar 500 watt, gets out okay, but not very many of them out there anymore.  Most of the time they aint speaking English anyway.

Cellphones and hands free headsets are the thing now.

And is that (gasp, shock, horror), dare I say it, a SCHOOL BUS in that photo?   So you've been fibbing all this time  -  you don't really have a "real" bus, but instead you have a real bus (ahem).   Or were some GMs painted NSBY?

Enquiring minds need to know.

It's OK actually, don't feel too bad about this terrible fact being revealed to the whole world (and the NSA).   There's help out there  -  "Hi, I'm Purple Willie and I own a school bus".   We're in this together . . .

Yes some of us still have and use them..Mostly from rig to rig when traveling with friends..Won't take the bus anywhere with out it..Just another way to communicate..Don't eat anything and doesn't take much room..Not as busy as it once was..But still works..Gonna get one for the toad..Cable

There are still locations without cell phone coverage. Course if you have a satellite phone, that's different ($$$). I still have a CB in my bus and will re install one in the truck. Truckers still use CB and it is another form of communication. Good Luck, TomC

I installed a new one in 2011 and it has the alerts/warnings for weather and as long as it has power it goes off without having it turned on.
That is a good thing to have in the Midwest, central US.

Monitor channel 19 and the truckers will be talking about where the cops, wrecks, etc are located and that can sometimes be of great help in an advance detour plan. :)

We've got a rubber ducky radio but I never turn it on unless we come on a traffic jam.  Then sometimes the truck chatter will tell me what is going on and how long it might last.  Other than that I'm not interested in listening to trucker wisdom while I drive but YMMV.  I can't afford to run the frenchy bus fast enough to worry about radar traps.

The Uniden76 xl  is the same as a Cobra 29 . matter of fact Uniden made them for Cobra for a good number of years and then it be came public and  the uniden 76 and the 66 ( same as cobra 25 made the scene) i had a little uniden 510e that had the right guy tune and a good set of Firesticks  and have been told i was hiding a heater some where cause there was no that  a lil ole 510 would get out like that .  i use and old galaxy 66 now with a cobra 29 as back up and texas star for when i really feel the need to reach and touch someone when ( ie getting over all the noise when trying to get important directions and so ) as far having  a cb  none of my trucks would leave the yard with out one,  if the drive has his own custom set   we  install it together   that way i know the correct  size wiring is used with good in line fuses .  that 76xl is a good radio if you decide not to use it pm me i might just take it off your hands :)

Lafayette 625 was the best of the crop, have spend too much on other junk, glad that part of my life is over, yes have something that was factory installed, you know the type, everything on the mic including wx.  It worked when I checked it, but not been on in last 5 years or 70 k miles.

Using a Galaxy 99 in my truck right now that has been worked on. I have no problems reaching out and touching folks!
To keep it on topic, that radio will go in the bus when done!
