Hi guys,
I just noticed a ticking noise that sounds like it's coming from somewhere on the front side of my engine. I'm not sure how long it's been there, and it seems to go away when my air pressure blows off. It's not really loud and it doesn't seem to be coming from the air compressor. It comes back when it's pumping air and getting close to blowing off. Is this something that I need to tear into? Any ideas on what it could be?
Thanks in advance

Gary - That's your compressor ticking away. When the air is up it kicks off. My brand new rebuilt compressor does the same.

Well that's good news! The strange thing is it seems to be coming from the front of the engine (pulley side) and nowhere near the compressor, but it sure acts like the compressor. Maybe the sound is just carrying through to the front of the engine? That or I just can't seem to hear exactly where it's coming from. :D

Mine does that too. I had the compressor off last winter and found the drive coupling is likely causing it. It is a splined cylinder about 3 to 4 inches diameter and as long, that engages to the gear on the back of the engine on one side, and the compressor on the other. It rattles under load when the comp. makes air. Don't worry about it.

Ear to the hose trick will tell the tale? Or stethoscope?

Not to disagree with you guys but his 8V92 has a harmonic balancer on the crankshaft the compressor noise shouldn't be heard up front on his engine like a 6v92 that carries the noise from the rear to the front
The Jakes if equipped will click sometimes if a seal is bad so will the governor weights and a loose valve seat the valve seat I doubt and they will click with low idle rpm, like you guys I would not worry about it
Well, I just went out there with a stethoscope and couldn't pinpoint where the noise was coming from. It still sounds like it's somewhere on the front of the engine and is only coming on with the compressor at close to max pressure and quits when it blows off. This may have been here for awhile and I just never noticed it. I just got done doing a full servicing and am going to go on a 600 mile trip. I guess I'll just not worry about it unless it gets louder.

Gary, when you run for 50 or so miles and get the engine good and warm tell us if goes away
Well I just got done going 300 miles and there is no change. It's got to have something to do with the compressor because it's still quitting immediately after it blows off? The strange thing is... I don't hear any ticking at the compressor. The bus is doing great and the ticking isn't getting any louder. I guess I'll just roll with it.

Gary could it be sticky unloader valves in the compressor outlet hose head. Or air dryer check valve.?
