Title: A Timing
Post by: Rick 74 MC-8 on July 08, 2013, 08:02:10 AM
I remember reading but I don't know if there was a definitive answer. Is there an easey way to check to see if a 8v71 is A timed. My engine I believe is A timed with  n65 Brown tag injectors. I can make it smoke at will at almost any rpm. The rack was run about a year ago

Thanks Rick

A timing was never intended to be used with a 4 speed that was a truck setup for 10 speeds works well there

"A" timing works well by cranking up the governor to 2400-2450, keep it spinning to minimize smoke and maximize pulling power.>>>D (RPM will also keep the fan speed up to control heat build up)

I'm happy with the performance. Im not sure if it is A timed. Was wondering if there is a easy way to check.

The book shows a method wherein you pull an injector and measure the cam lift at TDC or something similar.  It sounds like a pita, involves a dial indicator with a very long probe.  If you are really interested I can copy it to you.  If your injectors are timed at 1.484 it is probably A timed, if it is timed at 1.460 it is probably S timed.
