Title: What's your dream coolant?
Post by: NonHippieBus on May 08, 2013, 09:51:38 PM
Hi Ya'll-

8v71 undergoing a radiator upgrade.  Unlike a car, coolant replacement in our coaches can be considered a major purchase.

What's your preferred coolant mixture in your bus?  Do you like any additives i.e. water wetter or similar.  Just curious what you guys are running or wish you were running

8V-71 is not very sensitive to coolant, since it has dry liners and is not subject to cavitation.  If I was running hot I would definitely try Waterwetter (used it with success is several race cars) but I'm not running hot, it's expensive, so I don't.  Going out on a limb, I just use green antifreeze.

Like Brian states, plain green works well in 8V71. Have had it in my 06 for 10 yrs only changed once, never a problem.

Alliance brand heavy duty (Green) from a FrieghtLiner dealer and RO water works just as good as distilled for me or buy the designer colors and use the distilled water

I watched a guy use W/M (green) antifreeze (Dan's friend) it was written all over the jug for light duty automotive use but he was sold on the distilled water which was fine for his old 8v71 that had no water around the cylinder

The later 8v71's will have cavitation problems pull a liner and you see black areas on the cylinder walls (heat) then you bore the walls use good antifreeze and keep the system balanced a 8v71 is more sensitive to antifreeze than most think  FWIW

I have a old DD manual that states 'ditch water is not recommended use only clean water" I laugh at that one with everyone so hung up on distilled water but if I used the new long life designer color antifreeze it would be distilled water
