Title: 8v92 on ebay
Post by: longjohn on March 24, 2013, 02:03:36 PM
Would this engine work in a conversion coach, it is supposed to be new but the no warranty clause is concerning.

Maybe rebuilt but not new that is a sliver engine, crate engines never come with fram filters and painted manifolds or turbos with the electric shut down and air throttle I would say it's a military engine

Agree, looks like the paint job was a major concern, if it a proper and correct rebuild, the price is not way out of line today. With 9200 injectors and better turbo, it would wake up.

Yes, I got a surplus 8V-71 Large air box ports, had been used, but had new everything, then I paid $50.00 at auction and won, just shows the old saying is correct about the blind squirrel finding a nut every so often.

I noticed he did not post the model and application numbers that is a late model according to his serial numbers a 97 or 98 so you know it is not a bus or truck engine

Looks like a bus engine with the shallow oil pan and air throttle. Good Luck, TomC

Do you folks think that it's a brand new engine or factory rebuilt??   I wonder what kind of offers he has received?

Rebuilt, remanufactured isn't new..    If I was buying new I expect to have new castings.   Rebuilt cylinder heads that have run a million miles or idled for 15 years..

MTU (Motor and Turbine Union), the parent company of Freightliner and Detroit is still building the 8V-92TA (8V-71TA and 6V53TI) for the military. Unless it is a military engine, then it is a rebuild. Good Luck, TomC

With no warranty I would say that is Ace Hardware rebuild (paint) it doesn't have a bus oil pan the standard bus oil pans are sloped 3 inches deep in the front to 6 inches in the rear

It is not setup for a gear driven alternator or a power steering pump the adapter plate is missing who know what else is missing behind the covers it probably doesn't even have the right cam for alternator

These are Military, a few months ago there were a few hundred of them on www.govliquidation.com (http://www.govliquidation.com) for auction. There were a few that had been rebuilt and in the military shipping containers. The military doesn't rebuild their own, if the engine is having issues they pull it out and put in another. Rebuilds are done by a government contractor. I you enter Detroit Diesel 8v92 on Ebay a few come up, some painted green some silver. The military one's are usually 475 hp and have jake brakes. The military is getting rid of a lot of old 80's 90's large prime movers that have the 8v92 as the power source so you will see many of these popping up for sale. Last year they had complete Jake brake kits for auction.
