Title: Delco 50DN output
Post by: Bob & Tracey on January 18, 2013, 10:55:19 AM
I understand this alternator is rated to put out 300 amps but what is the highest output under normal operating conditions?

Thanks,
Bob

12v version is rated at 300amps at 14v. It will only put out what is needed. The big alternator was used to power the two 1hp blowers for over the road A/C. On my bus, when the batteries get up fully charged, my alternator light comes on indicating a no charge situation. Hence, I simply run down the road with my headlights on all the time.
Wiring should be heavy enough to accommodate 300amps after startup. Good Luck, TomC

   Hi;
The 24v version on my MCI is rated at 225 amps.
What you have is a lot more amps than most folks
     can use.
                            Good luck,  Merle.

Tom,

When your batts are fully charged and there is no alt output why do you turn on the headlights?

This almost never happens to me because I connect the house batts to the bus alt for charging.

Also, I have my VR set to 13.75 amps as per the manual.

If the MCI is rated for 225 amps at 24vdc, is there a way to tap 12vdc off it to charge the house batteries after the starting batteries topped off?

You can parallel a couple of 100 amp vanners, and get the job done. Not the cheapest way out.
If I was doing it again, I make the house bank 24volt.

Yes, but they cost almost $700.00 each.

I use a 100 amp vanner. I use a high capacity constant duty solonoid in the main line to the house batteries that energizes when the engine is started.  Works well , I can run one ac while on the road without the genny starting up.  Cheers Gerry
