Title: 8v71 Compressor Drive
Post by: travlinman on December 07, 2012, 05:52:05 PM
Hey Guys

Well I'm finally in a spot where I am able to pull my engine air compressor. All is going well except for one question I have. There is a washer/spacer between the engine gear and the compressor gear drive. This part is showing some wear and I'm wondering if I should replace it?

If it needs to be replaced what is it called? Where can I get one?

I went to the local DD dealer and they were less than worthless, so any help on this would be appreciated.

Pics attached

Cheers

Can the gear be reinstalled in the opposite direction so the wear is on the better (trailing) side of the teeth?

I just scrapped two engines. Wish I kept some more parts.

Just to be clear, the part I am talking about is the small ring in the photo.

The drive gear does appear to be reversible.

Me I would change the drive over to the new style that one is sloppy no matter what you do

OK Clifford I was thinking you would have a good idea for me.

As far the new drive goes, who is a good source?

Speaking of drive gears, do not forget the "Dog Bone", they will let you sit, takes a mechanic to replace it, so if you have an older 8V-71 with the fine teeth, I would have a look see while your at home.  More than one have been towed and few mechanics recognize the issue, some spend many hours before they find it. Very simple the blower and fuel pump stop turning  :o
Most rebuilds I have seen, this drive gear is never looked at, just reinstalled IF they had the blower off. Seems rebuilds are quick cylinder kits and bearings.  For me, every nut and bolt, plug, oil & water is removed and block is steam cleaned.  When quality counts ;D

Hillsboro Diesel, Steve.  Forget about Pac Diesel and go with Rick and Ozzie for everything you need, new or used.

There is also a plastic air compressor drive available.  If it happens to break, it won't take out your gear train like the metal one can.  That warpy washer is to keep tension on the drive so it won't chatter.

My 4905 parts book lists this as Group 4-56 AIR COMPRESSOR DRIVE-Part #2355613-SPRING-damper, drive coupling

Parts ordered from Hillsboro Diesel today. Super helpful and knowledgeable about two strokes, one look at what I have and they had parts picked and ready to ship!
