Title: I40 construction in Arkansas
Post by: David Anderson on October 01, 2012, 05:12:53 PM
Coming home last Wednesday we got in a construction bottleneck on I40 east of Hazen AR.  We saw a sign east of the Brinkley exit that said, "alternate route suggested", but pressed on westward hoe.  2 miles later we were stopped, not moving at all, dead stopped.  It took us an hour to go 6 miles.  We exited on Arkansas 33 and went south and drove U.S. 70 to Carlisle and reentered I40.  Passed lots of trucks heading eastbound on 70 doing the same thing from the other direction.  Be aware if anyone is running that route.  It was not fun.

That sounds almost as bad as the construction I hit on I15 between Las Vegas and Cedar City in 2004.  The DOT had the speed limit down to 10 MPH.  The state police were directing everyone off at an off ramp and then right back on to slow traffic down.  It took at least an extra two hours.  No alternate routes that I know of in the area.  First and last time I have ever seen a 10 MPH speed limit on a freeway.

I will warn folks that there is a very narrow bridge due to construction on I80 both east and west bound somewhere around Sidney, Nebraska.  I managed to rub the side of the bus against the bridge.  No damage other than a scratch on the side of the bus luckily.

Was this construction something simply or was it major....something that will be going on for weeks?

One of the routes we chose to return home was the 40 through Arkansas. If we choose that route, we will be through there in a week or so.

Thanks for the heads up!

My understanding is that it has been ongoing for a year.  Some friends of ours hit it in July and had the same experience.  U.S 70 is only about 1 mile south of I40 and parallels it.  That route is not out of the way.  You just have to pass through 3 small towns.  It gives you something to see ;)
